AUSTIN, Texas, October 30. AFTER one day of competition, the Indiana women's swimming and diving team leads Michigan by a 150-108 score, and trails Texas by a 174-84 score in a double dual meet being held at the Lee and Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center in Austin, Texas.<\/p>\n
The final session will take place beginning at 11 a.m. ET on Saturday.<\/p>\n
Margaux Farrell, Kate Fesenko, Donna Smailis and Brittany Strumbel took third in the 200 free relay with a time of 1:34.87. The B squad of Courey Schaefer, Amanda Smith, Taylor Wohrley and Justine Jones placed sixth (1:39.11), while Laura Head, Ashley Kranz, Kristen Mitsch and Afton Robertson were eighth (1:45.93).<\/p>\n
Strumbel led the way in the 500 free with a third-place finish (4:52.37-NCAA B standard), followed by Nikki White in sixth (4:59.29). Cassie Luhrsen was eighth (5:00.38), with Amanda Smith 12th (5:02.73) and Amilee Smith 13th (5:04.57).<\/p>\n
Fesenko missed out on first in the 200-yard individual medley by 3\/10ths of a second, taking second in 2:00.02, which is an NCAA B standard. Ashley Jones was fourth (2:03.16), and Allysa Vavra fifth (2:03.84). Brittany Barwegen took 10th in a time of 2:08.08, with Kim Tracey 12th (2:08.98).<\/p>\n
Smailis was the top Hoosier in the 50-yard freestyle, touching the wall in 23.83. Farrell placed seventh (24.23), with Strumbel ninth (24.49), Justine Jones 12th (25.24) and Wohrley 13th (25.63).<\/p>\n
Fesenko nearly hit the NCAA A standard in the 100 backstroke to lead off the 400 medley relay, covering the distance in 53.38. She teamed with Barwegen, Smailis and Strumbel to finish second in 3:43.21.<\/p>\n
Fesenko then bettered her time in the evening 100 back competition, posting a 53.30 to win the event. Smailis also got an NCAA B standard with a second-place time of 55.14. Wohrley was eighth (57.81), Ashley Jones 10th (58.29) and Tracey 12th (59.09).<\/p>\n
Indiana took the fourth through seventh spots in the 1-meter springboard diving competition, led by Gabby Agostino in fourth (269.65), Logan Kline fifth (262.40), Christina Kouklakis sixth (253.45) and Amy Korthauer seventh (250.10). Kouklakis led the was in the 3-meter competition with a fourth-place finish (284.95), followed by Agostino in fifth (278.95). Korthauer was seventh (253.45), and Kline 10th (205.40).<\/p>\n
The evening session began with the 200 medley relay as Fesenko, Ashley Specht, Smailis and Strumbel posted a second-place time of 1:43.45. Wohrley, Barwegen, Amanda Smith and Farrell took eighth in 1:48.96.<\/p>\n
Vavra took third in the 400 individual medley with an NCAA B cut of 4:15.84. Ashley Jones was fifth (4:20.18), Amilee Smith took ninth (4:31.70), Amanda Smith 11th (4:34.05) and Luhrsen 12th (4:34.43). Fesenko and Smailis went 2-3 in the 100 butterfly with Fesenko posting a time of 54.63, and Smailis coming home in 55.48. Barwegen was sixth (56.34), Tracey 11th (57.86) and Mitsch 14th (1:07.00).<\/p>\n
Strumbel placed fourth in the 200 free (1:51.34), as Farrell followed close behind in fifth (1:51.55). Schaefer tied for sixth in 1:52.21, with White eighth (1:52.78) and Amanda Smith 14th (1:57.19). In the 100 breaststroke, Vavra claimed fifth (1:04.72), with Specht ninth (1:05.40), Barwegen 10th (1:05.41), Amilee Smith 11th (1:05.70) and Katelyn Ishee 13th (1:07.24).<\/p>\n
Day one concluded with the 800 free relay as Fesenko, Strumbel, Smailis and Ashley Jones combined for a second-place finish in 7:24.14. Vavra, White, Farrell and Schaefer took fourth in 7:31.35, with Amanda Smith, Luhrsen, Justine Jones and Wohrley ninth (7:45.74).<\/p>\n
