That is a full circle move for <\/span><b>Schubert<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, who had great success with the club in the 1970\u2019s and 1980\u2019s, coaching a group that went on to win 17 Olympic medals, set 88 American Records, and set 21 World Records. His athletes at that time included swim legends such as <\/span><b>Shirley Babashoff, Tiffany Cohen, Brian Goodell, Sippy Woodhead, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><b>Dara Torres. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The coach left the club in 1985 for a short stint with the Mission Bay Makos before heading to college swimming, where he had decorated careers at the University of Texas and USC. This move would essentially eliminate FINA\u2019s power in drug testing. USA Swimming\u2019s President <\/span><b>Jim Sheehan <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and Executive Director <\/span><b>Chuck Wielgus <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">showed their support for this move with an open letter on September 29th to the USADA, backing the recommendations that would give more support to WADA. The current procedures dictate that WADA conducts drug testing for each sport\u2019s federations, but it is the federations that ultimately decide what to test for and what to release. In light of the doping controversies surrounding the 2016 Rio Olympic Games, including the controversial <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/what-the-independent-investigation-into-russias-systematic-doping-program-means-to-swimming\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">McLaren Report<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">changes to the current system of anti-doping measures were <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/national-anti-doping-organizations-make-recommendations-to-strengthen-wada\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">initially proposed back in August by many National Anti-Doping Organizations<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (NADO\u2019s) during a meeting in Copenhagen. They were then pushed by WADA stakeholders on September 20th, with WADA\u2019s Executive Committee endorsing the suggestion the following day. The Cal women opened with a victory over Pac-12 competitor Oregon State, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/pac-12-meet-of-the-week-cal-women-on-path-of-contention\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">winning every event for a dominant win<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Other notable match-ups included <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/sec-meet-of-the-week-georgia-begins-title-defense-with-win-over-unc\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Georgia\u2019s sweep of UNC<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/sec-weekly-analysis-auburn-holds-off-wisconsin-in-battle\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Auburn\u2019s close wins over Wisconsin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/pac-12-weekly-swim-analysis-cal-freshmen-might-key-title-chances\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the Cal men opening their season against Pacific<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. In one of the more innovative match-ups of the week, the Michigan Wolverines competed against Louisville in an unusual <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/big-ten-meet-of-the-week-michigan-sweeps-louisville-with-sudden-change\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201ctripleheader\u201d dual meet format<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, with the Michigan men and women coming away with the win across a three session contest. The two day meet was scored separately as three sessions, with the winner of 2 out of the 3 taking the overall meet win. To make matters more interesting, races and distances were decided right before the meet, with swimmers given little notice to what or even when they would be swimming. This marks the 13th year that the Golden Goggles have been held, with <\/span><b>Bob Costas <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">serving as the host for the fourth time in the event\u2019s history. <\/span><b>Katie Ledecky <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><b>Michael Phelps <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">will likely be favorites in multiple categories, as both are nominated for respective Female and Male Athletes of the Year, Female and Male Performances of the Year, and Relay Performance of the Year. <\/span><b>Ledecky <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">has won Female Athlete of the Year the last three years and has won Female Performance of the Year since 2012. <\/span><b>Simone Manuel, Maya DiRado, Anthony Ervin, Nathan Adrian <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><b>Ryan Murphy <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">are the other nominees for Athlete of the Year. Notably, during this circuit <\/span><b>Chad le Clos <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/chad-le-clos-first-to-100-world-cup-gold-medals\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">has become the first male athlete to win more than 100 world cup gold medals<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which he continued to extend with wins in the 50 (22.08), 100 (49.12), and 200 (1:49.71) butterfly in Dubai<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The two leaders of the circuit, <\/span><b>Katinka Hosszu <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><b>Vladimir Morozov, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">continued to rack up more wins in Dubai to further distance themselves from the pack. <\/span><b>Morozov <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">racked up four more wins throughout the two day meet, winning the 100 free (46.71), 100 IM (51.05), 50 free (20.88), and 100 breast (56.52). <\/span><b>Hosszu, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">swimming her usual marathon slate of events, totaled a staggering nine<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">wins throughout the meet, with wins in the 200 free (1:54.37), 200 IM (2:05.87), 50 back (26.35), 800 free (8:27.45), 100 back (56.56), 100 IM (58.09), 400 free (4:03.14), 400 IM (4:33.84), and 200 fly (2:05.62). <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It was much of the same story in Doha, as <\/span><b>Hosszu <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">came away with another nine wins on the women\u2019s side and <\/span><b>Morozov <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">another four wins as well.
