﻿{"id":224535,"date":"2016-10-08T19:57:32","date_gmt":"2016-10-09T02:57:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=224535"},"modified":"2016-10-11T08:00:41","modified_gmt":"2016-10-11T15:00:41","slug":"pac-12-weekly-recaps-cal-men-women-win-big-utah-2nd-at-fgcu-classic","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/pac-12-weekly-recaps-cal-men-women-win-big-utah-2nd-at-fgcu-classic\/","title":{"rendered":"Pac-12 Weekly Swim Recaps: Cal men, women win big; Utah 2nd at FGCU Classic"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>By Dan D\u2019Addona.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Amy Bilquist, Marina Garcia<\/strong> and <strong>Celina Li<\/strong> each won two events as the Cal women&#8217;s swimming and diving team team opened its dual season with a 163-88 at Oregon State.<\/p>\n<p>Li&#8217;s victories came in the 100 freestyle (51.19) and 500 freestyle (4:56.82), while Garcia earned victories in the 100 breaststroke (1:04.39) and 200 breaststroke (2:18.09) and Bilquist swept the 100 backstroke (54.07) and 200 backstroke (1:56.21).<\/p>\n<p>The Golden Bears claimed victory in all 14 races, which included wins by a trio of freshmen \u2014 <strong>Chenoa Devine<\/strong> in the 1,000-yard freestyle (10:02.12), <strong>Maddie Murphy<\/strong> in the 100-yard butterfly (54.55) and <strong>Keaton Blovad<\/strong> in the 200-yard individual medley (2:04.63).<strong> Kristen Vredeveld<\/strong> won the 200 freestyle (1:50.57) and <strong>Katie McLaughlin<\/strong> won the 200 butterfly (1:59.14).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Cal men roll past Pacific<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Cal men defeated Pacific 172-52 in their season opener.<\/p>\n<p>Freshman <strong>Michael Jensen<\/strong> won the 200 freestyle (1:36.27) and the 100 freestyle (43.22) to lead the Golden Bears.<\/p>\n<p>Freshman <strong>Andy Song<\/strong> picked up his first collegiate win with a victory in the 100 backstroke (49.95) and junior <strong>Connor Hoppe<\/strong>, the defending Pac-12 champion in the 100 breaststroke, won the event in 53.87. Pac-12 Newcomer of the Year <strong>Andrew Seliskar<\/strong> pulled away for a convincing win in the 200 butterfly (1:45.65) and defending Pac-12 champion <strong>Justin Lynch<\/strong> claimed the 50 freestyle (19.95).<\/p>\n<p>Sophomore <strong>Mike Thomas<\/strong> picked up a win in the 200 backstroke (1:46.64). Senior <strong>Hunter Cobleigh<\/strong> won the 200 breaststroke (2:00.62). <strong>Nick Norman<\/strong> won the 1,000 freestyle (9:12.93) and 500 freestyle (4:26.99).<\/p>\n<p>Lynch earned his second victory in the 100 butterfly (47.50) and Thomas closed the day&#8217;s scoring out with the top time in the 200 IM (1:56.15).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Utah 2nd at Florida Gulf Coast Classic<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Utah men finished second overall during the two-day Florida Gulf Coast Classic, with the women placing fifth.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Jack Burton<\/strong> took the top spot in both the 100 (54.86) and 200 breaststrokes (2:00.6) while, on the women&#8217;s side, <strong>Stina Colleou<\/strong> took third in the 100 breast (1:03.96) and second in the 200 breast (2:17.51).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Liam O&#8217;Haimhirgin<\/strong> won the 100 free, touching in 45.25.<\/p>\n<p>In the 400 IM, <strong>Ethan Dillard<\/strong> took third with a time of 4:01. Dillard later took second in the 100 IM (51.12) and the 200 IM (1:51.18).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Rahiti De Vos<\/strong> was second in the 200 free touching in at 1:38. <strong>Sarah Lott<\/strong> also took second in the event (1:50.57) for the women&#8217;s team. In the 500 free, De Vos took second with a time of 4:28.70, while Anderson took fourth (5:00.56) for the women.<\/p>\n<p>The Utes also competed in the Intermountain Shootout with two top finishes by <strong>Matteo Sogne<\/strong> and <strong>Chris Taber<\/strong>. Sogne took first in the 500 free touching in at 4:33.81 while Taber was first in the 200 fly (1:50.49).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Arizona cruises past Hawaii, Northern Arizona<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Arizona men&#8217;s and women&#8217;s swimming and diving swept the first meet of the season in Flagstaff. The women were victorious against NAU, 222-77 and Hawaii, 232-68. The men defeated Hawaii, 192-105.<\/p>\n<p>For the women, sophomore <strong>Annie Ochitwa<\/strong> stood out winning in each of her four events, two individual and two relay. She placed first in the 50 free with 23.24, two-tenths of a second ahead of teammate <strong>Morgan Ginnis<\/strong>. Ochitwa also won the 100 fly with 54.39.<\/p>\n<p>The sophomore swam the third leg for the winning 200 medley relay team with <strong>Katrina Konopka, Mallory Korenwinder<\/strong> and Ginnis (1:41.46). Later, with Ginnis, <strong>Ashley Sutherland<\/strong> and <strong>Hannah Cox<\/strong>, Ochitwa also won the 400 free relay (3:24.24).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Taylor Garcia<\/strong> won the 100 backstroke (54.98).<\/p>\n<p>Freshman Cox had a strong performance in her first collegiate meet. She won two individual events and was runner-up in another. Cox outswam freshman <strong>Kirsten Jacobsen<\/strong> by one-tenth of a second to win the 500 free (4:59.60) and placed first in the 200 free (1:50.77). The freshman also took second in the 1,000 free with 10:20.53.<\/p>\n<p>For the men, sophomore <strong>Parks Jones<\/strong> was victorious in each of his two events, both were close races. He also placed first in 400 free relay. Jones won the 200 free with 1:40.92, out-touching Hawaii by five-hundredths of a second. The sophomore also took first in the 100 free (45.97), beating out teammate <strong>Nicholas Magana<\/strong> by eight-hundredths of a second.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Dan D\u2019Addona.
