CHARLESTON, Illinois, October 24. THE Eastern Illinois men's and women's swimming squads officially opened the 2009-10 schedule on Saturday afternoon, splitting their home opener to visiting Evansville. The EIU men earned a nice win, 153-109, but the women lost, 162-100. <\/p>\n
"We really had a great first meet," said second year head coach Matt Bos. "The men were strong the entire day, and their big early relay win really helped set the tone. The women may have come out a bit shorthanded, but still competed well against a tough Evansville squad." <\/p>\n
The Panther men opened with a crucial 1-2-3 team finish in the 200-Medley Relay, which was followed by freshman Ken Tiltges scoring two wins in both the 100-Free and 200-Free. Fellow newcomer John Wilson then swam a quick 21.73 in the 50-Free and came in a very close second to Tiltges in the 100-Free.<\/p>\n
Sophomore Matt O'Hagan, the current school record holder in the 100-Breast, picked up a 59.52 win with freshman Joe Ciliak was right behind him at 59.92. <\/p>\n
"We had some other freshman step up bit time in their first meet for us today," said Bos. "Daniel Enge swam a lifetime best 1:59.31 in the 200-Fly, while Mike Lacine was second in the 100-Back with a time of 54.64." <\/p>\n
The women started off strong, setting a new Ray Padovan Pool record in the 200-Medley Relay, and freshman Hailey Foss scored her first collegiate win in the 1000-Freestyle with a time of 10:49.84, which ranks her fourth all-time. Foss' split of 5:19.57 at the 500-M mark also ranked her tenth all time at EIU.<\/p>\n
Another freshman, Kelli Dicanio secured a win in the 200-Breaststroke as her time of 2:26.85 ranked her third all-time. Dicanio also was touched out in a close race in the 100-Breast, yet her 1:08.48 finish ranks her fifth all-time. <\/p>\n
"Overall I was extremely happy with our performance and really happy with the way we have been training," Bos said. <\/p>\n
Both Panther units will be back in action next Saturday (Oct. 31), hosting instate rival Illinois-Chicago at the Ray Padovan Pool. First splash is scheduled for 2 pm. <\/p>\n
