THE East Carolina swimming and diving teams hosted their second home meet of the season Saturday with the men claiming a victory over Towson, while the women picked up wins over Campbell and Marshall, but dropped a tight contest to Towson. Collectively the Pirates registered 19 victories on the day &#8211; 12 by the Pirates men and seven by the women&#39;s team. <\/p>\n<p>Towson defeated ECU&#39;s women&#39;s team by a 163-137 margin, while the Pirates defeated Campbell by a 208-94 score and Marshall by a 193-100 margin. On the men&#39;s side, ECU downed Towson by a final tally of 199-88. <\/p>\n<p>&quot;It was a very fast meet for us today and I&#39;m very excited about the performances of both our teams,&quot; Pirate coach Rick Kobe said. &quot;We had a great effort tonight from both our veterans and our newcomers.&quot; <\/p>\n<p>Helping earn valuable points was sophomore diver Meghan Coyne, who swept the diving events. Coyne scored a 275.70 tally on the one-meter and a 268.30 score on the three-meter in her victories. Freshman Kirstie Russell placed third on the one-meter and fourth on the three-meter, while Chole McCall placed seventh on the one-meter in her first competition. On the men&#39;s side, freshman Tyler Dunsmore swept both springboards, while freshman Alex Cohen placed third on both one and three-meter springboards. <\/p>\n<p>To get things started in between the lanes, the men&#39;s relay team comprised of juniors Roman Sandler and Andrew Stoker, senior Jason Guzewich and sophomore Travis Stauder tapped the wall in a time of 1:34.94 to capture first in the 200-medley. On the women&#39;s side, ECU&#39;s quartet of junior Jenna Stewart, sophomores Kelsey Brosi and Kali Gaskill and freshman Holly Berenotto capped the day by setting a Minges Pool record in the 400-yard free relay with a first-place time of 3:29.48. <\/p>\n<p>In between, the Pirates earned 13 individual victories. Junior Thiago Cavalcanti claimed ECU&#39;s first individual win of the day when he topped the field in the 1000-freestyle with a time of 9:27.61. He later earned his second victory of the meet with a first-place finish in the 500 free with a time of 4:37.34 Andrew Christian followed Cavalcanti with a win in the 200-yard free (1:44.55), which was followed by an ECU sweep of the 100-yard back on both the men&#39;s and women&#39;s side. <\/p>\n<p>Freshman Kayla Ford finished just ahead of fellow newcomer Kylie Francis to win the 100 and 200 back. Freshman Andy Richter duplicated her performance in the men&#39;s 100, while freshman Mike Jolly touched first in the men&#39;s 200.<\/p>\n<p>Stauder (58.68) was two-tenths of a second faster in the men&#39;s 100-yard breaststroke than Cavalcanti (58.70) and seven seconds faster in the 200 breast as the Pirates claimed the top four spots in both events. Stauder won the 200 with a time of 2:08.67.<\/p>\n<p>On both the men and women&#39;s side the ECU sprint freestylers dominated their competition. Stewart placed first with Gaskill and Brosi coming in second and third in the 50 free. Stewart tapped in a time of 23.67 with Brosi finishing in 24.23 and Gaskill in 24.34. Stewart also took first in the 100 free with a time of 50.97, missing her NCAA `B&#39; by seven-tenths of a second.<\/p>\n<p>The men earned the top two spots in both of the sprint free events. Senior Jason Guzewich (21.01) touched nine-tenths of a second ahead of Ailton Temotio (21.10) in the 50 free, while Temotio turned the tables on Guzewich in the 100 free. Temotio tapped in a time of 46.98, while Guzewich placed second with a time of 48.10.<\/p>\n<p>Stoker won his second event of the day when he took first in the 100-yard butterfly in a time of 49.70. Earlier in the day he placed first in the 100 fly with a time of 1:53.72.<\/p>\n<p>ECU returns to the water on November 7 when both squads travel to Charleston, S.C., to take on the College of Charleston Cougars.
