DAVIS, California, October 24. THE UC Davis men's and women's swimming and diving teams defeated UC Santa Cruz Saturday in a dual meet at Schaal Aquatics Center in Davis, Calif. The men's squad won by a score of 146-134 in their first meet of the 2009-10 season, while the women picked up their first win of the year with a score of 157-131. <\/p>\n
The Aggies got off to a strong start with both 200 medley relay squads coming in first place. The women's "A" relay of Linda Hermann, Morgan Lee, Jenah Dawson and Kayleigh Foley clocked in at 1:52.90 while the men's "A" squad of Daniel Donnelly, Keegan Groot, Adam Yen and Russ Underwood recorded a first-place time of 1:35.52. <\/p>\n
In the 1000 freestyle, Kathryn Jovino took first place with a time of 11:07.67 and Alex Wells was second (11:23.80). For the men, Adam Borchard and Matt Herman claimed the top two spots with times of 9:35.19 and 9:46.24, respectively. <\/p>\n
UC Davis picked up another first-place finish in the 200 free. Bridget Bugbee recorded a time of 1:56.40 to take the win and Buffy Ajimura placed second with a season-best time of 1:58.49. Grace Benefield placed fourth with a time of 2:01.94. Jason Singh won the 200 free for the men in his Aggie debut with a time of 1:46.20 and Jordan Lager finished just behind him in second with a time of 1:46.41. Ed Morrison was third at 1:46.91. <\/p>\n
UC Santa Cruz' first win of the day was in the 100 back where Shelby Burman clocked in at 1:02.33 to win the race. Samantha Lougee finished in second with a season-best time of 1:02.99. Samantha Capozzo was fourth (1:04.40). For the men, Scott Weltz won the 100 back with a time of 51.56 while Jimmy Fong was second (52.45). Alex Daneke finished third with a time of 52.68. <\/p>\n
Linda Hermann won the 100 breaststroke for the UC Davis women with a time of 1:09.11. Alyssa Britt finished second (1:10.05) and Julie Peri was third with a season-best time of 1:10.20. Keegan Groot led the men's side with a first-place time of 59.55. Junior Kyle Anderson finished just behind him with a time of 1:00.78 and Zach Hansen was third (1:02.19). <\/p>\n
Dawson had a season-best time of 2:10.57 in the 200 fly to win the event for the women. Jen Cadmus finished third with a time of 2:16.56. For the men, Donnelly, Yen and Jeremy Smith took the top three spots in the event. Donnelly finished in first with a time of 1:51.99 while Yen and Smith made their UC Davis debuts and finished in second and third, respectively. <\/p>\n
Foley won the 50 freestyle for the second time this season with a time of 25.02. Capozzo finished second (25.22) while Bender finished third (25.69). Underwood won his first individual event of the day with a time of 21.63 while sophomore Derek Baldwin recorded a time of 22.22 to finish second. <\/p>\n
Foley's second win of the day came in the 100 free where she clocked in at 53.37. Katelyn Griffin came in second with a season-best time of 54.41 and Dawson was third at 54.83. Underwood was the men's event winner in a time of 47.24 while Baldwin and Morrison finished second and third. Freshman Josef Stitts made his Aggie debut and clocked in at 49.82. <\/p>\n
Lougee took first in the 200 back with a season-best time of 2:14.41 while Grace Benefield was second with a time of 2:15.19. Alex Wells finished fourth. UC Santa Cruz' Isaac Kim was the men's winner with a time of 2:00.91. <\/p>\n
In the 200 breaststroke, Peri won her first event of the year with a personal-best time of 2:30.26. The Slugs' Sugeera Eckley finished second and Bender was third at 2:32.11. <\/p>\n
Paul Navo led the men's divers with a first place finish in the 1-meter event and a score of 281.70, while Jason Andrade came in second on the high board with a score of 226.43. UC Santa Cruz won the 1-meter women's diving event with Lynn Meissner's score of 207.38 and the men's 3-meter diving as Alexander Garcia scored a 253.20. Shiree Segev was the Aggies' top scorer with a score of 200.63. The women took the top three spots on the high board, with Jennifer Meyer leading the way with a score of 213.43. <\/p>\n
The men's and women's swim teams will return to Schaal Aquatics Center to host Seattle Saturday, Oct. 31 at 11:00 a.m. <\/p>\n
