BURLINGTON, Vermont, October 29. THE University of Vermont swimming and diving team won 12 events on its way to a 177-104 victory over Siena in the Catamounts' home opener on Saturday afternoon. UVM improves to 4-0 on the year, matching the best start in school history in the process.<\/p>\n
"Today was a great day for us, I was happy with the way the team competed and it was especially nice to get a win at home," said Vermont head coach Gerry Cournoyer.<\/p>\n
Sophomore Claudia Etherington, junior Kailey Gardner and seniors Avery Pittman and Meaghan Cunningham each won two events to pace the Catamounts. Etherington set a pair of Forbush Natatorium records as she swept the 100 (57.22) and 200 (2:00.93) backstroke events. Her time in the 200 also broke the Vermont school record.<\/p>\n
Gardner won both the 500 (5:06.27) and 1,000 (10:26.04) freestyle events, while Pittman took first in the 100 (58.85) and 200 (2:09.32) butterfly events. Cunningham swept the two dives, taking first in the one-meter with a score of 223.20 and the three-meter with a tally of 228.66.<\/p>\n
Also earning wins on the afternoon for the Catamounts were freshman Laura Stephens in the 100 breaststroke (1:06.36), senior Caitlin Dowd in the 200 breaststroke (2:30.35) and freshman Katie Adams in the 200 free (1:57.43). Vermont also took first in the 200 medley relay in a time of 1:49.79 with the team made up of Etherington, Stephens, Pittman and Kaitlyn Evarts.<\/p>\n
The Catamounts will return to action next Saturday when they travel to face Niagara in a meet that will start at 11 a.m.<\/p>\n
