Last week, the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) released the list of substances that will be banned beginning on Jan. 1, 2017. As is typically the case, several changes were made from the list that went into effect this past Jan. 1.<\/p>\n
\u201cWADA is pleased to publish the 2017 Prohibited List, which is one of five International Standards that are mandatory for all signatories of the World Anti-Doping Code (Code) to follow,\u201d said WADA President Sir Craig Reedie<\/strong>. \u00a0\u201cAll athletes around the world are held to these standards and there can be no tolerance for people who intentionally break the rules. Updated annually, the List is released three months ahead of taking effect so that all stakeholders\u2014in particular athletes and their entourage\u2014have ample time to familiarize themselves with the List and its modifications.”<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n
WADA’s press release encourages athletes to consult the list prior to it taking effect in hopes of avoiding any situation like that which happened this year when meldonium was added to the banned list effective Jan. 1. Several Russian athletes, including\u00a0Yulia Efimova<\/strong>, received provisional suspensions that were later overturned when it was determined how much time it takes meldonium to leave an athlete’s system.<\/p>\n
The substances added to the list include types of anabolic agents, peptide hormones and growth factors, beta-2-agonists, hormone and metabolic modulators, stimulants, narcotics and glucocorticoids.<\/p>\n
In addition, the use of inhaled oxygen was approved. The memo from WADA also reminds athletes that they must attain a TUE to be allowed use of any of these substances for medical reasons.<\/p>\n
