﻿{"id":223650,"date":"2016-10-03T07:31:01","date_gmt":"2016-10-03T14:31:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=223650"},"modified":"2016-10-03T07:31:01","modified_gmt":"2016-10-03T14:31:01","slug":"wilrich-coetzee-collects-third-win-at-2016-new-zealand-sc-champs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/wilrich-coetzee-collects-third-win-at-2016-new-zealand-sc-champs\/","title":{"rendered":"Wilrich Coetzee Collects Third Win At 2016 New Zealand SC Champs"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>by Dave Crampton.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><b>Wilrich Coetzee<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> earned his third open title in two days at the New Zealand Short Course Championships at the Sir Owen G Glenn National Aquatic Centre in Auckland.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">His favoured butterfly events, however, are yet to come and it is these events he seeks to qualify for the World Short Course champs in Canada in December.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe targets are the butterfly events on the last two days so it\u2019s a case of being patient, every day doing all the processes and working on the skills,\u201d Coetzee said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The 19-year-old won the 100m backstroke and 200m individual medley on the second night to go with his win in the 400m medley on the opening night of the meet that doubles as the trial for December\u2019s FINA World Short Course Championships.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Coetzee was the only swimmer under the two minute mark in the 200m medley, winning in 1:59.66 from <\/span><b>Jacob Garrod<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and Australian <\/span><b>Donald Cameron<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. In the 100m backstroke he stormed home in the final 25m to claim the title in 53.57s, to pip his older brother Corneille by 0.1s. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sixteen-year-old <\/span><b>Gabrielle Fa\u2019amausili<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> retained her title in the 100m backstroke in a National Age Grade record, clocking 59.54s, the sole swimmer under a minute. She\u2019s gone faster, though, stopping the clock at 58.64 at last year\u2019s champs, also a NAG record. She was unaware of the mark, and unaware of the record until her teammates told her. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cMy short course is a bit up and down,\u201d she said. \u201cI hit the wall and I didn\u2019t really want to turn around \u2013 then I looked at my teammates and they cheered me.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Bronson Lloyd<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, 13, notched up his second medley win, clocking 2:14.87 in his 200m final, just 0.18s off a NAG mark.
