﻿{"id":223476,"date":"2016-10-02T09:12:46","date_gmt":"2016-10-02T16:12:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=223476"},"modified":"2016-10-02T09:12:46","modified_gmt":"2016-10-02T16:12:46","slug":"daniel-hunter-tops-200-free-field-at-new-zealand-short-course-championships","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/daniel-hunter-tops-200-free-field-at-new-zealand-short-course-championships\/","title":{"rendered":"Daniel Hunter Tops 200 Free Field At New Zealand Short Course Championships"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>By Dave Crampton<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">New Zealand freestyler <\/span><b>Daniel Hunter<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> may have missed qualifying for the Rio Olympics by just 0.04 seconds in the 50m freestyle, but he has qualified for the FINA World Short Course championships in the 200m event, half a second inside the qualifying standard.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hunter, 22, clocked 1:45.70 in a solid swim in his first event at the New Zealand Short Course championships in Auckland, which started yesterday. The champs double as a qualifying meet for the World Short Course champs in Canada in December. \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hunter said his Rio disappointment had only spurred him on.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cYou have to use the frustration to push it and make sure you are on top of your game for the next season and not dropping off.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hunter\u2019s other freestyle events are later in the week. He has focused on improving the latter half of his favoured 100m event, with his coach <\/span><b>Jana Wilkitzki<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> pushing him to achieve this by lengthening to the 200m.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI\u2019m fine with the front end speed, it\u2019s the back end speed that needs a lot of work,\u201d Hunter said. \u201cWe think that\u2019s where it is going to come from, training that 200m (but) to qualify for the 200m for the world championship is pretty awesome and a lot of pressure off the rest of the week. Now I can just focus on enjoying it.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Bronagh Ryan<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> converted her top qualifying effort to victory in the women\u2019s 100m breaststroke final in a New Zealand Open record of 1:07.91, taking 0.2s off the mark held by <\/span><b>Natasha Lloyd<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> set at last year\u2019s champs.
