Brazil’s\u00a0Samir Barel<\/strong> made history Thursday when he became the first Brazilian and just the 138th person overall to complete the Triple Crown of open water swimming.<\/p>\n

Barel, 33, won the Manhattan Island Marathon Swim in New York City in 2014 and then crossed the English Channel last year. Thursday, he swam the Catalina Channel in 8:45:30, a new South American record, completing the monumental accomplishment.<\/p>\n

Barel is only the third Brazilian to ever complete the Catalina Channel crossing, joining Dailza dos Santos<\/strong> (1997) and Adherbal Treidler de Oliveira<\/strong> (July 2016).<\/p>\n

“Everything was perfect! I swam well, the conditions were very good and the sea smooth. In the last 5km I took a strong current, but it was expected in that final line. My technical staff was excellent\u2014Dami\u00e1n Blaun<\/strong> (an Open Water FINA Grand Prix winner) made a pacing for me to give rhythm, which was certainly important to break the record, and my coach Esther Nu\u00f1ez<\/strong> was always guiding me the best she can.<\/span><\/p>\n

“I would like to appreciate everyone who participated in this journey\u2014my family, friends, colleagues, fans, athletes, this crown its yours! I’m not anything without you guys. And like I always say “We are all able.” I had done what I did this last 3 years to show people it is possible, and I hope this story is an example to everyone who needs a push to overcome obstacles. No matter what its the challenge, you can make it. With passion, discipline and hard work, anything is possible.”<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Barel also credited a successful crowdfunding effort for allowing him to attempt the swim. The campaign\u00a0raised more than $11,000 (or 36,000 reais) to help with\u00a0transport, hotel, food, sanction fees and technical support.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
