{"id":222897,"date":"2016-09-29T14:57:47","date_gmt":"2016-09-29T21:57:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=222897"},"modified":"2016-09-29T14:57:47","modified_gmt":"2016-09-29T21:57:47","slug":"rome-city-council-approves-ending-2024-olympics-bid","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/rome-city-council-approves-ending-2024-olympics-bid\/","title":{"rendered":"Rome City Council Approves Ending 2024 Olympics Bid"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Eight days after Rome mayor\u00a0<strong>Virginia Raggi<\/strong> issued a motion to end the city&#8217;s bid to host the 2024 Olympics, the city council approved that change in course.<\/p>\n<p>The council, controlled by Raggi&#8217;s anti-establishment 5-Star Movement, voted 30-12 to scrap the bid, just one year after the same body voted 38-6 to\u00a0<em>approve<\/em> the bid under Raggi&#8217;s predecessor,\u00a0<strong>Ignazio Marino<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Any bid to host an Olympic Games requires the support of a city&#8217;s government, but bid leaders and the Italian Olympic Committee (CONI) still have hopes that a regime change could put the plan back on track.<\/p>\n<p>The IOC told the\u00a0<em>Associated Press<\/em> that it was in contact with CONI and the bid committee to &#8220;make sense of these political circumstances,&#8221; and more figures to be discussed when IOC President\u00a0<strong>Thomas Bach<\/strong> meets with CONI and bid officials next week in Rome.<\/p>\n<p>If the Rome bid is not revived (which seems highly unlikely at this point), Budapest, Los Angeles and Paris would be the only remaining contenders to host the 2024 Games.
