{"id":222447,"date":"2016-09-27T09:00:26","date_gmt":"2016-09-27T16:00:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=222447"},"modified":"2016-09-26T13:31:54","modified_gmt":"2016-09-26T20:31:54","slug":"performance-of-the-week-kathleen-baker-crowned-queen-of-the-pool","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/performance-of-the-week-kathleen-baker-crowned-queen-of-the-pool\/","title":{"rendered":"Performance of the Week: Kathleen Baker Crowned Queen Of The Pool"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This week\u2019s performance of the week goes to Cal sophomore and Olympic gold medalist from this summer <\/span><b>Kathleen Baker<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/kathleen-baker-queen-of-the-pool-as-cal-women-return-to-competition\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">who was crowned Queen of the Pool at the Bears first competition of the season<\/span><\/a><b>. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Cal women\u2019s team opened the season this weekend against Cal Poly, holding their traditional short format dual meet of five 100\u2019s (each of the four strokes and a 100 IM). The Queen of the Pool has the fastest aggregate 500 time, rewarding the swimmer with the most versatility across all five swims.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This was <\/span><b>Baker\u2019s <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">first race since leading off the American 400 Medley Relay at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. That netted <\/span><b>Baker <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a gold medal to add to her silver medal winning performance in the 100 backstroke earlier in the week. In her return to the pool, <\/span><b>Baker\u2019s <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">combined time was 4:43.28, just ahead of Cal senior <\/span><b>Celina Li <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(4:44.91). <\/span><b>Li <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">has won the title for the last three years, but wasn\u2019t able to track <\/span><b>Baker <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">down this time. Individually, <\/span><b>Baker <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">won the 100 butterfly (54.11) and 100 IM (55.79). Teammate <\/span><b>Abbey Weitzeil, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">who red-shirted last year to train for the Olympics and also left Rio with an Olympic gold and silver medal, grabbed two wins herself in the 100 free (49.81) and 100 breast (1:04.56). Sophomore <\/span><b>Amy Bilquist <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">picked up the last win the 100 backstroke (53.25).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Baker\u2019s <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">versatility makes sense, given the Golden Bear was 2nd in the 200 IM at NCAA\u2019s last year in 1:52.95. The sophomore will definitely be looking to grab the top spot in that event this year at NCAA\u2019s, while riding the momentum from this summer to make a bigger impact in the backstroke events. As a freshman she was outside of the A final in both backstrokes at NCAA\u2019s, finishing 13th in both 100 and 200. <\/span><b>Baker <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">will hit the pool with the Cal Bears in two weeks when they take on Oregon State on October 7th. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Congratulations <\/span><b>Kathleen Baker<\/b> <span style=\"font-weight:
