LOS ANGELES. Feb. 10 – After getting swept by Bay Area rivals Cal and Stanford a couple of weeks ago, Coach Mark Schubert's Women of Troy ended their dual meet season on a high note here today, upsetting crosstown rival and No. 6-ranked UCLA, 164-136. <\/p>\n
It was the Trojans' eighth-consecutive victory over the Bruins and since taking over the women's program in the mid'90s Schubert has an unblemished record against the blue and gold. He also coaches the USC men's team. <\/p>\n
SC was led by senior Corrie Murphy, junior Kellie Brennan and sophomores Michala Kwasny and Asa Sandlund, who won two events each to lead the No. 10 Trojans in a meet at theMcDonald's Olympic Swim Stadium. <\/p>\n
Seven different Trojan swimmers and divers posted wins as USC improved to 4-3 overall and 2-3 in the Pac-10. Murphy posted the only NCAA automatic qualifying time of the day, swimming a career-best 4:14.96 in the 400 IM for the win. She also won the 200 back in 2:00.91, an NCAA consideration time.<\/p>\n
Sophomore Jenny Parmenter, however, may have turned in the most surprising swim of the day. An underdog in the 200 free, Parmenter dropped almost three seconds off of her season's top time to win the event in 1:48.44, an NCAA consideration time. Parmenter also took second in the 100 free (50.82, NCAA consideration) and third in the 50 free (23.82), both season bests.<\/p>\n
Parmenter is a product of Coach Terry Stoddard's Rose Bowl Aquatics program. A long-time Schubert assistant while the duo were at Mission Viejo in the 1970s and '80s, Stoddard guided the Rose Bowl program from its inception until the late '90s. He is now head coach at Pasadena City College. <\/p>\n
Across from the swim pool, Brennan and freshman Nicci Fusaro were dominating the diving. Brennan won both the 1-meter (275.03) and the 3-meter (299.33) while Fusaro took second in both events, scoring 256.65 in the 1-meter and 298.80 in the 3-meter.<\/p>\n
Though MacGregor and Kwasny were among a handful of USC swimmers who were battling colds on Saturday, both came through with big wins. Kwasny won the 200 fly in 1:59.53 and took the 200 breast in 2:16.32 (season best). MacGregor won the 100 breast in 1:03.36 not long after taking third in the 200 free.<\/p>\n
Sandlund opened the individual competition with an easy win the 1650 free (16:42.16) while teammate Melissa Deary took second in 17:05.20. Sandlund led a 1-2-3 Southern Cal finish in the 500 free, winning the race in 4:53.18. Deary was second (4:58.91) and sophomore Heather Valerio was third (5:00.71). <\/p>\n
USC's other winner was Katie Meyer, who won the 100 back in 55.94, a season best mark and an NCAA consideration time. <\/p>\n
UCLA was led by freshman sprinter Sara Platzer, who won the 50 (23.40) and 100 free (50.43). The Bruins also won both the 400 medley and free relays. <\/p>\n
Next up for both teams is the Pac-10 Conference Championships, Feb. 22-24 in Seattle (Federal Way). <\/p>\n
