{"id":221364,"date":"2016-09-17T14:59:43","date_gmt":"2016-09-17T21:59:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=221364"},"modified":"2016-09-17T14:59:43","modified_gmt":"2016-09-17T21:59:43","slug":"noah-zhang-posts-top-time-at-fourth-annual-swim-for-alligator-lighthouse","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/noah-zhang-posts-top-time-at-fourth-annual-swim-for-alligator-lighthouse\/","title":{"rendered":"Noah Zhang Posts Top Time At Fourth Annual Swim For Alligator Lighthouse"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><b>ISLAMORADA<\/b>,\u00a0<b>Florida Keys\u00a0<\/b>&#8212; More than 180 athletes competed in a 9-mile open-water swim\u00a0<span class=\"aBn\" tabindex=\"0\" data-term=\"goog_925682507\"><span class=\"aQJ\">Saturday<\/span><\/span>\u00a0off the Florida Keys.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Noah Zhang<\/strong> of Jupiter, Fla., emerged as the top individual swimmer at the fourth annual Alligator Lighthouse Swim in the Atlantic Ocean.<\/p>\n<p>Zhang, 17, a high school senior at Oxbridge Academy, completed the swim\u00a0<span class=\"aBn\" tabindex=\"0\" data-term=\"goog_925682508\"><span class=\"aQJ\">in 3 hours<\/span><\/span>\u00a0and 46 minutes.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This is the craziest race I have ever done,&#8221; Zhang said. &#8220;When I came around the lighthouse I saw two turtles and a couple of barracudas.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I snorkeled the reef at the lighthouse as a kid, so this was a great excuse to come back to the Keys.,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>Zhang said his strategy was to get a good start.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I wanted to get out fast, keep a good pace and stay there,&#8221; said Zhang, who swims for the North Palm Beach Swim Club . &#8220;The guy behind me (second-place finisher Diego De Los Rios of Miami Beach) pushed me, which was good.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Participants swam to Alligator Reef Lighthouse, around the beacon and returned to the Islamorada shoreline.<\/p>\n<p>Islamorada residents <strong>David Jacobson, Tracy Collett, Robert Kelley<\/strong> and <strong>Eric Wunderlich<\/strong> won the four-person relay division with a time of\u00a0<span class=\"aBn\" tabindex=\"0\" data-term=\"goog_925682509\"><span class=\"aQJ\">4:09:18<\/span><\/span>.<span style=\"color: #fd0000;\">\u00a0<\/span>Hollywood, Fla., residents<strong> Bennett Rodriguez<\/strong> and <strong>Carly Hyman<\/strong> won the two-person division with\u00a0<span class=\"aBn\" tabindex=\"0\" data-term=\"goog_925682510\"><span class=\"aQJ\">3:50:05<\/span><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>The top female swimmer was <strong>Alison Hayden<\/strong> of Kinnelon, New Jersey, with a time of\u00a0<span class=\"aBn\" tabindex=\"0\" data-term=\"goog_925682511\"><span class=\"aQJ\">4:02:38<\/span><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>The event was staged as a college scholarship fundraiser for Keys students interested in competitive swimming, but also to raise awareness of a need to preserve the 143-year-old Alligator Reef Lighthouse and five other aging lighthouses off the Florida Keys.<\/p>\n<p>The beacons are no longer tools for maritime navigation due to Global Postioning System usage and other modern seamanship tools.<\/p>\n<p>The event&#8217;s individual course record of\u00a0<span class=\"aBn\" tabindex=\"0\" data-term=\"goog_925682512\"><span class=\"aQJ\">3:18:03<\/span><\/span>\u00a0was set in 2015 by Miami resident <strong>Yoelvis Pedreza<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><em>Press release courtesy of Swim for Alligator Lighthouse\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>ISLAMORADA,\u00a0Florida Keys\u00a0&#8212; More than 180 athletes competed in a 9-mile open-water swim\u00a0Saturday\u00a0off the Florida Keys.
