﻿{"id":221284,"date":"2016-09-16T10:36:11","date_gmt":"2016-09-16T17:36:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=221284"},"modified":"2017-06-14T13:13:22","modified_gmt":"2017-06-14T20:13:22","slug":"2016-paralympic-games-day-9-prelims-recap","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/2016-paralympic-games-day-9-prelims-recap\/","title":{"rendered":"2016 Paralympic Games: Day 9 Prelims Recap"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Prelims of day nine of the 2016 Paralympic Games saw a new World Record being set by Cheng Jiao and multiple Paralympic Records.<\/p>\n<h3>Men&#8217;s 100 Free&#8211;S7<\/h3>\n<p>Great Britain&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Jonathan Fox\u00a0<\/strong>kickstarted day nine with a top qualifying time of 1:03.17 in the men&#8217;s 100 free S7.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Carlos Serrano Zarate\u00a0<\/strong>of Colombia pegged a close second with a time of 1:03.80, while China&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Pan Shiyun\u00a0<\/strong>was third with a 1:04.51.<\/p>\n<p>Australia&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Matthew Levy\u00a0<\/strong>finished fourth overall with a 1:04.90, ahead of Germany&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Tobias Pollap&#8217;s\u00a0<\/strong>1:05.73.<\/p>\n<p>Great Britain&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Michael Jones <\/strong>took sixth with a\u00a01:06.06, followed by the Ukrainian duo of\u00a0<strong>Marian Kvasnytsia\u00a0<\/strong>(1:06.76) and\u00a0<strong>ievgenii Bogodaiko<\/strong> (1:07.36).<\/p>\n<h3>Women&#8217;s 100 Free&#8211;S7<\/h3>\n<p><strong>McKenzie Coan\u00a0<\/strong>of the USA led prelims of the women&#8217;s 100 free S7 with a qualifying time of 1:09.74.<\/p>\n<p>Second went to Germany&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Denise Grahl<\/strong> and her time of 1:13.43, followed closely by China&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Huang Yajing\u00a0<\/strong>and her time of 1:13.50.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Susannah Rodgers\u00a0<\/strong>posted a 1:13.96 to return as the fourth place seed, while the USA&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Cortney Jordan\u00a0<\/strong>finished fifth in prelims with a 1:14.13.<\/p>\n<p>China&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Ke Liting\u00a0<\/strong>(1:15.15), Canada&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Tess Routliffe\u00a0<\/strong>(1:15.70), and Germany&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Verena Schott\u00a0<\/strong>(1:18.57) finished sixth through eighth.<\/p>\n<h3>Men&#8217;s 100 Back&#8211;S9<\/h3>\n<p>Poland&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Patryk Biskup<\/strong> and Great Britain&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>James Crisp\u00a0<\/strong>posted matching times of 1:05.00 from separate heats to both return as the first place seeds in tonight&#8217;s final of the men&#8217;s 100 back S9.<\/p>\n<p>China&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Liu Xiaobing\u00a0<\/strong>was a close third with a qualifying time of 1:05.13.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Tamas Toth<\/strong> of Hungary finished fourth in prelims with a 1:05.47, just ahead of the Australian duo of\u00a0<strong>Brenden Hall<\/strong> (1:05.56) and\u00a0<strong>Timothy Hodge<\/strong> (1:05.99).<\/p>\n<p>New Zealand&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Jesse Reynolds<\/strong> took seventh with a 1:06.34, while\u00a0<strong>Logan Powell<\/strong> of Australia was eighth with a 1:06.37.<\/p>\n<h3>Women&#8217;s 100 Back&#8211;S9<\/h3>\n<p>The women&#8217;s 100 back S9 prelims were highlighted by a tie for first between Australia&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Ellie Cole<\/strong>, the current World Record holder, and Spain&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Nuria Marques Soto<\/strong>. The two delivered matching times of 1:11.22 from separate heats to return as the first place seeds.<\/p>\n<p>The USA&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Hannah Aspden\u00a0<\/strong>finished a close third with a time of 1:11.78.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Amy Marren<\/strong> of Great Britain\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>Wang Jiexin<\/strong> of China qualified with close times of 1:14.06 and 1:14.14 respectively.<\/p>\n<p>The USA&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Elizabeth Smith<\/strong> (1:15.06), Ireland&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Ellen Keane\u00a0<\/strong>(1:15.44), and New Zealand&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Tupou Neiufi<\/strong> (1:15.68) rounded out the top eight.<\/p>\n<h3>Men&#8217;s 50 Free&#8211;S8<\/h3>\n<p>China&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Wang Yinan\u00a0<\/strong>led a tight prelims field in the men&#8217;s 50 free S8 posting the top time at a 26.80.<\/p>\n<p>Ukraine&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Iurii Bozhynskyi<\/strong> was a close second with a 26.95, while third went to China&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Song Maodang<\/strong> (27.29).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Bohdan Hrynenko<\/strong> of Ukraine finished fourth with a 27.35, followed closely by Great Britain&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Josef Craig<\/strong> and his time of 27.36.<\/p>\n<p>France&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Charles Rozoy<\/strong> (27.44), China&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Yang Guanglong<\/strong> (27.65), and Canada&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Zack McCallister\u00a0<\/strong>(27.90) completed the top eight qualifiers.<\/p>\n<h3>Women&#8217;s 50 Free&#8211;S8<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Stephanie Millward\u00a0<\/strong>of Great Britain flirted with a new World Record in prelims of the women&#8217;s 50 free S8, stopping the clock at a 30.82 for a new Paralympic Record. The current World Record sits at a 30.13, set in 2014 by Australia&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Maddison Elliot.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Elliot, meanwhile, claimed a close second place seed with a 30.83.<\/p>\n<p>China&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Jiang Shengnan<\/strong> and Australia&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Lakeisha Patterson\u00a0<\/strong>posted close times of 30.89 and 30.97 to return as the third and fourth place seeds.<\/p>\n<p>Great Britain&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Stephanie Slater<\/strong> (31.17), Canada&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Morgan Bird\u00a0<\/strong>(31.49), China&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Jin Xiaoqin\u00a0<\/strong>(31.70), and Ukraine&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Kateryna Istomina\u00a0<\/strong>(32.06) finished fifth through eighth.<\/p>\n<h3>Men&#8217;s 50 Back&#8211;S4<\/h3>\n<p>The Czech Republic&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Arnost Petracek\u00a0<\/strong>dashed ahead of the competition in prelims of the men&#8217;s 50 back S4, posting the top time of the morning at a 43.69.<\/p>\n<p>China&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Liu Yuntao<\/strong>\u00a0kept a tight race with Mexico&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Jesus Hernandez Hernandez\u00a0<\/strong>finishing a slim .05 seconds apart. Liu took second with a 44.42, while Hernandez settled for third with a 44.49.<\/p>\n<p>Mexican teammates\u00a0<strong>Juan Reyes<\/strong> and\u00a0<strong>Gustavo Sanchez Martinez\u00a0<\/strong>finished fourth and fifth with times of 45.96 and 47.95 respectively.<\/p>\n<p>The Czech Republic&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Jan Povysil<\/strong> (48.00), Brazil&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Ronystony Cordeiro\u00a0<\/strong>(49.07), and Italy&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Efrem Morelli\u00a0<\/strong>(49.75) were sixth through eighth.<\/p>\n<h3>Women&#8217;s 50 Back&#8211;S4<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Cheng Jiao<\/strong> of China obliterated the previous World and Paralympic Records in prelims of the women&#8217;s 50 back S4, stopping the clock at a 47.68. The previous World Record sat at a 51.48 set in 1996 by Germany&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Kay Espenhayn<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Ukraine&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Mariia Lafina<\/strong> claimed the second place seed with a 51.62, followed closely by China&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Deng Yue\u00a0<\/strong>and her time of 51.94.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Maryna Verbova<\/strong> of Ukraine took fourth with a 53.38, while fifth went to Brazil&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Edenia Garcia&#8217;s\u00a0<\/strong>54.59.<\/p>\n<p>Mexico&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Nely Miranda Herrera\u00a0<\/strong>(56.05), Italy&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Arjola Trimi\u00a0<\/strong>(57.09), and Israel&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Sonja Sigurdardottir<\/strong> (1:01.65) completed the top eight qualifiers.<\/p>\n<h3>Men&#8217;s 200 IM&#8211;SM11<\/h3>\n<p>Spain&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Israel Oliver<\/strong> took first in prelims of the men&#8217;s 200 IM SM11, stopping the clock at a 2:27.67.<\/p>\n<p>Ukraine&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Viktor Smyrnov\u00a0<\/strong>finished second in prelims with a time of 2:31.78, while the third place seed went to Belarus&#8217;\u00a0<strong>Hryhory Zudzilau&#8217;s\u00a0<\/strong>2:34.53.<\/p>\n<p>The Chinese duo of\u00a0<strong>Lou Chenquan\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0<strong>Yang Bozun<\/strong> took fourth and fifth with times of 2:34.66 and 2:35.11 respectively.<\/p>\n<p>Japan&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Keiichi Kimura\u00a0<\/strong>(2:36.31), the USA&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Tharon Drake\u00a0<\/strong>(2:37.93), and Ukraine&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Oleksandr Mashchenko<\/strong> (2:40.39) rounded out the top eight.<\/p>\n<h3>Women&#8217;s 200 IM&#8211;SM11<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Liesette Bruinsma<\/strong> of The Netherlands claimed the first place seed in prelims of the women&#8217;s 200 IM SM11 with a time of 2:54.70.<\/p>\n<p>Finishing close behind were China&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Xie Qing<\/strong> and Sweden&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Maja Reichard<\/strong> with times of 2:55.75 and 2:55.80 respectively.<\/p>\n<p>Estonia&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Elisabeth Egel\u00a0<\/strong>took fourth in prelims with a 2:56.64, while fifth went to New Zealand&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Mary Fisher<\/strong> (3:00.69).<\/p>\n<p>Germany&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Daniela Schulte<\/strong> finished sixth with a 3:00.74, ahead of the Ukrainian duo of\u00a0<strong>Maryna Piddubna\u00a0<\/strong>(3:00.75) and\u00a0<strong>Yana Berezhna\u00a0<\/strong>(3:08.50).<\/p>\n<h3>Men&#8217;s 100 Free&#8211;S13<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Boki Ihar<\/strong> of Belarus took down the previous Paralympic Record in the men&#8217;s 100 free S13, setting the new bar ta a 51.45. Ihar currently holds the World Record at a 50.85, which he set in 2015 while in Glasgow.<\/p>\n<p>The Ukrainian duo of\u00a0<strong>Maksym Veraksa\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0<strong>Iaroslav Denysenko\u00a0<\/strong>claimed the second and third place seed with times of 53.18 and 53.41 respectively.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Carlos Farrenberg<\/strong> of Brazil returns as the fourth place seed with a 53.63, while Ukraine&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Sergii Klippert\u00a0<\/strong>was fifth with a 53.69.<\/p>\n<p>Azerbaijan&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Dzmitry Salei<\/strong> (53.82), Uzbekistan&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Muzaffar Tursunkhujaev<\/strong> (53.85), and Australia&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Braedan Jason\u00a0<\/strong>(53.90) finished sixth through eighth.<\/p>\n<h3>Women&#8217;s 100 Free&#8211;S13<\/h3>\n<p>Great Britain&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Hannah Russell\u00a0<\/strong>squeezed under the one-minute mark in the women&#8217;s 100 free S13 preliminaries with a sizzling 59.99 to return as tonight&#8217;s top seed.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Anna Stetsenko<\/strong> of Ukraine, the current World Record holder in this event, turned in a time of 1:00.40 for the second place seed, while Uzbekistan&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Shokhsanamkhon Toshpulatova\u00a0<\/strong>was third with a 1:01.07.<\/p>\n<p>The USA&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Rebecca Meyers\u00a0<\/strong>took fourth with a 1:01.35, followed by a tie for fifth between Germany&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Naomi Maike Schnittger\u00a0<\/strong>and Uzbekistan&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Fotimakhon Amilova<\/strong>. The duo stopped the clock simultaneously at a 1:01.78.<\/p>\n<p>Italy&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Alessia Berra<\/strong> (1:02.29) and Uzbekistan&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Muslima Odilova<\/strong> (1:02.45) were seventh and eighth.<\/p>\n<h3>Men&#8217;s 50 Back&#8211;S5<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Daniel Dias<\/strong> of Brazil delivered the top time in prelims of the men&#8217;s 50 back S5, posting a final time of 36.46.<\/p>\n<p>Great Britain&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Andrew Mullen<\/strong> claimed second with a time of 37.77, while Vietnam&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Thanh Tung Vo<\/strong> took third in prelims with a 39.62.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Zsolt Vereczkei<\/strong> of Hungary was fourth in prelims with a 40.23, followed closely by Turkey&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Beytullah Eroglu&#8217;s\u00a0<\/strong>40.57.<\/p>\n<p>Mexico&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Diaz Diego Lopez\u00a0<\/strong>(40.73), New Zealand&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Cameron Leslie\u00a0<\/strong>(41.30), and Italy&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Andrea Massussi<\/strong> (43.82) rounded out the top eight.<\/p>\n<h3>Women&#8217;s 50 Back&#8211;S5<\/h3>\n<p>Prelims of the women&#8217;s 50 back S5 was highlighted by a race to the finish between Spain&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Teresa Perales<\/strong> and the Czech Republic&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Bela Trebinova<\/strong>. Perales stopped the clock a shy .01 seconds ahead of Trebinova to qualify first with a 44.48. Trebinova returns tonight as the second seed with a 44.49.<\/p>\n<p>Japan&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Mayumi Narita\u00a0<\/strong>turned in a time of 46.74 for the third place seed, while fourth went to China&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Zhang Li<\/strong> (48.30).<\/p>\n<p>The USA&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Alyssa Gialamas\u00a0<\/strong>(48.65), Norway&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Sarah Louise Rung<\/strong> (49.37), Belarus&#8217;\u00a0<strong>Natallia Shavel\u00a0<\/strong>(50.36), and France&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Anita Fatis<\/strong> (50.93) completed the top eight qualifiers.<\/p>\n<h3>Men&#8217;s 150 IM&#8211;SM3<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Dmytro Vynohradets&#8217;\u00a0<\/strong>of Ukraine cruised ahead of the competition in prelims of the men&#8217;s 150 IM S11, finishing more than twelve seconds ahead of the competition with a time of 2:46.04. With the World Record sitting at a 2:43.14 Vyrnohradets&#8217; has put himself in a good position to challenge it.<\/p>\n<p>The Chinese trio of\u00a0<strong>Li Tingshen<\/strong>\u00a0(2:58.54),<strong> Huang Wenpan<\/strong> (2:59.23) and\u00a0<strong>Du Jianping\u00a0<\/strong>(2:59.45) qualified second through fourth for tonight&#8217;s finals, all posting times within one second of each other.<\/p>\n<p>Thailand&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Somchai Doungkaew\u00a0<\/strong>turned in a 3:02.73 for fifth, followed by Mexico&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Arnulfo Castorena&#8217;s\u00a0<\/strong>3:12.70<\/p>\n<p>Sweden&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Mikael Fredriksson<\/strong> (3:24.81) and Mexico&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Cristopher Tronco\u00a0<\/strong>(3:37.08) finished seventh and eighth respectively.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Prelims of day nine of the 2016 Paralympic Games saw a new World Record being set by Cheng Jiao and multiple Paralympic Records.
