Day seven prelims of the 2016 Paralympic Games was highlighted by the a sweep of the top seeds in the breaststroke events by the Chinese athletes, including new Paralympic and World Records.<\/p>\n
Katarina Roxon<\/strong> of Canada led the women’s preliminary heats of the 100 breast SB8 with a qualifying time of 1:21.27. She will be joined in the middle of the pool by Ireland’s\u00a0Ellen Keane\u00a0<\/strong>(1:23.64) and Poland’s\u00a0Paulina Wozniak<\/strong> (1:25.21).<\/p>\n Great Britain’s\u00a0Claire Cashmore<\/strong> posted a 1:25.91 for fourth, ahead of Portugal’s\u00a0Joana Calado<\/strong> (1:26.52).<\/p>\n China’s\u00a0Xu Jialing\u00a0<\/strong>(1:32.48), New Zealand’s\u00a0Nikita Howarth\u00a0<\/strong>(1:33.70), and Costa Rica’s\u00a0Camila Haase Quiros<\/strong> (1:39.99) complete the top eight qualifiers.<\/p>\n Great Britain’s\u00a0Jonathan Fox\u00a0<\/strong>outlasted the competition in the men’s 400 free prelims with a time of 4:51.10.<\/p>\n Ukraine’s\u00a0Marian Kvasnytsia<\/strong> and Great Britain’s\u00a0Michael Jones\u00a0<\/strong>finished close together with times of 4:58.39 and 4:58.50 respectively.<\/p>\n Norway’s\u00a0Andreas skaar Bjornstad<\/strong> finished fourth with a 4:59.23, followed by Argentina’s\u00a0Facundo Joes Arregui’s\u00a0<\/strong>4:59.35.<\/p>\n Colombia’s\u00a0Carlos Serrano Zarate\u00a0<\/strong>(5:02.27), Spain’s\u00a0Antoni Ponce Bertran\u00a0<\/strong>(5:09.31), and Ukraine’s\u00a0Andriy Kozlenko<\/strong> (5:15.94) were sixth through eighth.<\/p>\n The British duo of\u00a0Scott Quin\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0Aaron Moores<\/strong> topped prelims of the men’s 100 breast SB14. Quin delivered a sizzling 1:06.65 for a new Paralympic Record, while Moores posted a 1:07.25 for second.<\/p>\n Marc Evers<\/strong> of The Netherlands turned in a 1:07.67 for third, just ahead of Japan’s\u00a0Yasuhiro Tanaka’s\u00a0<\/strong>1:08.65.<\/p>\n Norway’s\u00a0Adam Ismael Wenham<\/strong> (1:09.59), Japan’s\u00a0Taiga Hayashida\u00a0<\/strong>(1:10.70), Korea’s\u00a0Yang Mook Jung\u00a0<\/strong>(1:10.89), and Argentina’s\u00a0Elian Araya\u00a0<\/strong>(1:10.96) finished sixth through eighth.<\/p>\n The record breaking continued into the women’s 100 breast with Spain’s\u00a0Michelle Alonso Morales\u00a0<\/strong>lowering the Paralympic Record to a 1:13.05.<\/p>\n Magda Toeters<\/strong> of The Netherlands delivered a 1:17.83 to qualify second for finals, while the third place seed was claimed by Great Britain’s\u00a0Bethany Firth\u00a0<\/strong>(1:18.19).<\/p>\n The Netherlands’\u00a0Marlou van der Kulk\u00a0<\/strong>finished fourth in prelims with a 1:19.75, followed by Brazil’s\u00a0Beatriz Carneiro<\/strong> (1:22.31).<\/p>\n Belgium’s\u00a0Michelle Franssen<\/strong> (1:23.17), Sweden’s\u00a0Pernilla Lindberg<\/strong> (1:23.88), and Indonesia’s\u00a0Syuci Indriani<\/strong> (1:24.07) rounded out the top eight qualifiers.<\/p>\n Azerbaijan’s\u00a0Raman Salei<\/strong> took a close first in prelims of the men’s 100 back with a final time of 1:01.58. He was followed closely to the wall by the USA’s\u00a0Tucker Dupree\u00a0<\/strong>and Ukraine’s\u00a0Sergii Klippert<\/strong>. The two posted times of 1:01.61 and 1:01.72 respectively.<\/p>\n Dzmitry Salei<\/strong> of Azerbaijan took fourth with a 1:02.63, while fifth was claimed by Great Britain’s\u00a0Stephen Clegg\u00a0<\/strong>(1:03.11).<\/p>\n Greece’s\u00a0Charalampos Taiganidis\u00a0<\/strong>(1:03.70), Brazil’s\u00a0Thomaz Matera\u00a0<\/strong>(1:04.19), and Kazakhstan’s\u00a0Anuar Akhmetov<\/strong> (1:08.28) posted sixth through eighth place finishes.<\/p>\n The record book was re-written twice during prelims of the men’s 50 breast SB2 with Chnese teammates\u00a0Li Tingshen<\/strong> and\u00a0Huang Wenpan<\/strong> delivering swift finishes. Li got the record breaking started in heat one when he lowered the Paralympic Record to a 55.16. Huang delivered a sizzling 52.48 in heat two to lower Li’s Paralympic Record and set the new Para and World Record. The former record was a 56.27 set in 2004 by Mexico’s\u00a0Amulfo Castorena.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n Fellow Chinese teammate\u00a0Huang Chaowen\u00a0<\/strong>finished third in prelims with a 55.74, while fourth went to Kuraine’s\u00a0Dmytro Vynohradets’\u00a0<\/strong>56.35.<\/p>\n Thailand’s\u00a0Somchai Doungkaew\u00a0<\/strong>(56.69), Mexico’s\u00a0Armulfo Castorena\u00a0<\/strong>(58.99), Mexico’s\u00a0Cristopher Tronco\u00a0<\/strong>(59.07), and Greece’s\u00a0Ioannis Kostakis\u00a0<\/strong>(1:06.29) were fifth through eighth.<\/p>\n Jin Zhipeng<\/strong> of China took first in the men’s 50 breast SB3 with a time of 49.52. He was followed closely by Japan’s\u00a0Takayuki Suzuki\u00a0<\/strong>(49.71) and Spain’s\u00a0Miguel Luque\u00a0<\/strong>(49.79).<\/p>\n Italy’s\u00a0Efrem Morelli\u00a0<\/strong>finished fourth with a 49.88, followed by Canada’s\u00a0Jonathan Dieleman<\/strong> (50.08).<\/p>\n Australia’s\u00a0Ahmed Kelly<\/strong> (51.91), The Netherlands’\u00a0Michael Schoenmaker\u00a0<\/strong>(52.77), and Spain’s\u00a0Vicente Gil\u00a0<\/strong>(53.07) took sixth through eighth.<\/p>\n China continued to grab the top seeds in the breaststroke events with\u00a0Cheng Jiao\u00a0<\/strong>delivering a 59.87 in the women’s 50 breast SB3.<\/p>\n Ukraine’s\u00a0Olga Sviderska<\/strong> took second with a 1:01.31, finishing narrowly ahead of Mexico’s\u00a0Patricia Valle\u00a0<\/strong>(1:01.34).<\/p>\n Ukraine’s\u00a0Mariia Lafina\u00a0<\/strong>finished fourth overall with a 1:02.23, ahead of Italy’s\u00a0Arjola Trimi’s\u00a0<\/strong>1:06.55.<\/p>\n China’s\u00a0Deng Yue\u00a0<\/strong>(1:07.32), Brazil’s\u00a0Patricia Pereira Dos Santos\u00a0<\/strong>(1:07.38), and Brazil’s\u00a0Rildene Firmino\u00a0<\/strong>(1:07.66) finished sixth through eighth.<\/p>\n Boki Ihar<\/strong> of Belarus powered to a new Paralympic Record in prelims of the men’s 50 breast, setting the new bar at a 23.73.<\/p>\n A tight race followed between the second through fourth place athletes with a slim .11 seconds separating them. Brazil’s\u00a0Carlos Farrenberg\u00a0<\/strong>pegged the second place seed at a 24.41, just ahead of Uzbekistan’s Muzaffar Tursunkhujaev’s\u00a0<\/strong>24.48.
