CHAPEL HILL, North Carolina, August 27. KATIE Nolan, one of Pennsylvania's top high school swimmers last year, enrolled at the University of North Carolina this past Tuesday after signing her national letter of intent to swim with Coach Rich DeSelm's Tar Heel program. She had previously signed with the University of Southern California, but asked for and received her release this summer.<\/p>\n
Nolan is a native of Hershey, Pa. and she graduated from Hershey High School this past June. Her career best times are 52.99 seconds in the 100-yard butterfly and 1:59.26 in the 200-yard butterfly. She is also an outstanding sprinter in the freestyle with top times of 23.37 in the 50-yard freestyle, 49.75 in the 100-yard freestyle and 1:49.18 in the 200-yard freestyle.<\/p>\n
"We're excited to have Katie join our program at the University of North Carolina. We've had a history of having many excellent swimmers from the state of Pennsylvania attend UNC," said UNC head coach Rich DeSelm.<\/p>\n
Nolan was a member of U.S. Swimming's National Junior Team in 2007 and 2008, serving as the captain of the team in the latter year. She was the Pennsylvania state high school champion in the 100-yard butterfly four successive years (2006-09). She also won three consecutive state high school titles in the 100-yard freestyle (2007-09).<\/p>\n
"We followed Katie's progress in high school closely and felt she would develop into a terrific swimmer. She is not only a tremendous swimmer but also an outstanding young woman," said DeSelm. "We are thrilled that Katie has settled into school and we look forward to helping her attain her goals throughout her career as a student-athlete in Chapel Hill."<\/p>\n
