﻿{"id":220985,"date":"2016-09-13T09:49:04","date_gmt":"2016-09-13T16:49:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=220985"},"modified":"2017-06-14T13:25:04","modified_gmt":"2017-06-14T20:25:04","slug":"2016-paralympic-games-day-6-prelims-recap","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/2016-paralympic-games-day-6-prelims-recap\/","title":{"rendered":"2016 Paralympic Games: Day 6 Prelims Recap"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Prelims of day six of the 2016 Paralympic Games were highlighted by several Parlaympic Records falling, setting up for a swift finals session.<\/p>\n<h3>Men&#8217;s 400 Free&#8211;S6<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Thijs van Hofweegen<\/strong> of The Netherlands qualified first in the men&#8217;s 400 free, stopping the clock at a 5:11.79.<\/p>\n<p>The second place seed was claimed by Italy&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Francesco Bocciardo\u00a0<\/strong>and his time of 5:18.61, followed cloes by China&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Luo Jinbiao<\/strong> (5:20.7) and Cuba&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Lorenzo Perez Escalona\u00a0<\/strong>(5:20.79).<\/p>\n<p>Brazil&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Talisson Glock<\/strong> posted a 5:22.52 for fifth, followed by New Zealand&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Hamish McLean&#8217;s\u00a0<\/strong>5:22.88.<\/p>\n<p>Australia&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Matthew Haanappel\u00a0<\/strong>(5:36.09) and China&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Yang Hong\u00a0<\/strong>(5:44.82) completed the top eight qualifiers.<\/p>\n<h3>Women&#8217;s 400 Free&#8211;S6<\/h3>\n<p>On the women&#8217;s side, it was\u00a0<strong>Yelyzaveta Mereshko<\/strong> of Ukraine qualifying first with a time of 5:25.27 for the women&#8217;s 400 free.<\/p>\n<p>China&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Song Lingling\u00a0<\/strong>delivered a 5:35.43 for second, followed by Great Britain&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Eleanor Simmonds\u00a0<\/strong>(5:37.75) and\u00a0<strong>Ellie Robinson\u00a0<\/strong>(5:41.04).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Viktoriia Savtsova\u00a0<\/strong>of Ukraine took fifth in prelims with a time of 5:43.05, while sixth went to Ireland&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Nicole Turner<\/strong> (5:51.99).<\/p>\n<p>Mexico&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Vianney Trejo Delgadillo\u00a0<\/strong>(5:56.01) and Italy&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Emanuela Romano\u00a0<\/strong>(5:58.53) were seventh and eighth.<\/p>\n<h3>Men&#8217;s 200 IM&#8211;SM7<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Car;ps Serramp Zarate\u00a0<\/strong>of Colombia claimed first in the men&#8217;s 200 IM with a time of 2:40.58. He was followed closely by the USA&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Rudy Garcia-Tolson<\/strong><strong>\u00a0<\/strong>(2:43.26) and Ukraine&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Ievgenii Bogodaiko<\/strong> (2:44.89).<\/p>\n<p>Australia&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Matthew Levy<\/strong> edged out Germany&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Tobias Pollap<\/strong> for fourth with a 2:46.04 over Pollap&#8217;s 2:46.16.<\/p>\n<p>Italy&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>valerio Taras\u00a0<\/strong>(2:48.98), China&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Wang Jingang\u00a0<\/strong>(2:49.56), and Norway&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Andreas Skaar Bjornstad\u00a0<\/strong>(2:50.76) rounded out the top eight.<\/p>\n<h3>Women&#8217;s 200 IM&#8211;SM7<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Nikita Howarth<\/strong> of New Zealand posted the only sub-3 minute 200 IM of the morning, stopping the clock at a 2:58.82 for the first place seed in tonight&#8217;s final.<\/p>\n<p>Canada&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Tess Routliffe\u00a0<\/strong>finished second in prelims with a 3:04.87, followed by the USA&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Cortney Jordan<\/strong> and her time of 3:08.84.<\/p>\n<p>China&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Zhang Ying<\/strong> took fourth with a 3:13.95, just ahead of Canada&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Sarah Mehain<\/strong> (3:14.82).<\/p>\n<p>Italy&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Arianna Talamona\u00a0<\/strong>(3:18.06), Brazil&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Veronica Almeida\u00a0<\/strong>(3:22.27), and Spain&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Judit Rolo Marichal\u00a0<\/strong>(3:41.89) return as sixth through eighth.<\/p>\n<h3>Men&#8217;s 100 Free&#8211;S10<\/h3>\n<p>The Ukrainian duo of\u00a0<strong>Maksym Krypak\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0<strong>Denys Dubrov\u00a0<\/strong>continued to post 1-2 finishes in prelims of the men&#8217;s 100 free. Krypak delivered a 51.52 to claim the top seed in tonight&#8217;s final and put him in good contention to take down the existing Paralympic Record of 51.07 from 2012. Dubrov returns as second with a qualifying time of 51.76.<\/p>\n<p>Brazil&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Phelipe Rodrigues\u00a0<\/strong>took third in prelims with the only other sub-52 second swim&#8211;a 51.96.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Rowan Crothers<\/strong> of Australia finished fourth overall with a 52.98, followed by Brazil&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Andre Brasil<\/strong> and his time of 54.53.<\/p>\n<p>Canada&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Nathan Stein<\/strong> (54.56), The Netherlands&#8217;\u00a0<strong>Olivier van de Voort\u00a0<\/strong>(54.77), and Ukraine&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Dmytro Vanzenko\u00a0<\/strong>(54.77) complete the top eight qualifiers.<\/p>\n<h3>Women&#8217;s 100 Free&#8211;S10<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Aurelie Rivard\u00a0<\/strong>of Canada claimed the first place seed in prelims of the women&#8217;s 100 free with a 59.89&#8211;a new Paralympic Record.<\/p>\n<p>New Zealand&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Sophie Pascoe<\/strong> took second with a :01.54, followed by France&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Elodie Lorandi\u00a0<\/strong>(1:02.24).<\/p>\n<p>The Netherlands&#8217;\u00a0<strong>Lisa Kruger\u00a0<\/strong>finished a close fourth with a 1:02.73, just ahead of China&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Chen Yi\u00a0<\/strong>(1:02.79).<\/p>\n<p>Brazil&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Mariana Ribeiro\u00a0<\/strong>(1:02.84), The Netherlands&#8217;\u00a0<strong>Marije Oosterhuis\u00a0<\/strong>(1:03.16), and Mexico&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Steffany Rubi Cristino Zapata\u00a0<\/strong>(1:03.44) were sixth through eighth.<\/p>\n<h3>Men&#8217;s 100 Breast&#8211;SB11<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Oleksadr Mashchenko<\/strong> of Ukraine delivered the fastest time of the morning in prelims of the men&#8217;s 100 breaststroke, stopping the clock at a 1:13.75.<\/p>\n<p>A trio of 1:15&#8217;s followed him to the wall as Japan&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Keiichi Kimura\u00a0<\/strong>(1:15.05), China&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Yang Bozun\u00a0<\/strong>(1:15.17), and the USA&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Tharon Drake\u00a0<\/strong>(1:15.58) qualified second through fourth.<\/p>\n<p>Ukraine&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Viktor Smyrnov\u00a0<\/strong>took fifth with a 1:18.20, followed by Colombia&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Brayan Urbano Herrera&#8217;s\u00a0<\/strong>1:20.74.<\/p>\n<p>The Czech Republic&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Miroslav Smrcka\u00a0<\/strong>(1:23.65) and Cuba&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Yunerki Ortega\u00a0<\/strong>(1:25.73) were seventh and eighth.<\/p>\n<h3>Men&#8217;s 100 Breast&#8211;SB12<\/h3>\n<p>Belarus&#8217;\u00a0<strong>Uladzimir Izotau<\/strong> took first in prelims of the men&#8217;s 100 breaststroke SB12 with a qualifying time of 1:07.52.<\/p>\n<p>Azerbaijan&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Dzmitry Salei<\/strong> claimed second with a 1:08.68, while third went to Kazakhstan&#8217;s <strong>Anuar Akhmetov<\/strong> and his time of 1:09.35.<\/p>\n<p>Colombia&#8217;s <strong>Daniel Giraldo Correa <\/strong>finished fourth with a 1:10.53 ahead of the Ukrainian duo of\u00a0<strong>Sergii Klippert\u00a0<\/strong>(1:10.65) and <strong>Maksym Veraksa<\/strong> (1:10.92).<\/p>\n<p>Germany&#8217;s <strong>Daniel Simon<\/strong> (1:11.52) and Italy&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Fabrizio Sottile\u00a0<\/strong>(1:13.60) return as seventh and eighth for tonight&#8217;s finals.<\/p>\n<h3>Men&#8217;s 100 Back&#8211;S8<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Robert Griswold\u00a0<\/strong>of the USA finished first in prelims of the men&#8217;s 100 back with a 1:05.33 to set a new Paralympic Record in the event. Griswold was followed closely by Ukraine&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Iurii Bozhynskyi<\/strong> who finished with a time of 1:05.94.<\/p>\n<p>Great Britain&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Oliver Hynd\u00a0<\/strong>was third overall with a 1:06.12, just ahead of Ukraine&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Bohdan Hrynenko&#8217;s\u00a0<\/strong>1:06.73.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Pipo Carlomagno<\/strong> of Argentina took fifth in prelims with a 1:07.70, while China&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Zhou Cong<\/strong> settled for sixth with a 1:07.72.<\/p>\n<p>Australia&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Jesse Aungles<\/strong> was seventh with a 1:10.39 and Denmark&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Niels Mortensen<\/strong> was eighth with a 1:10.41.<\/p>\n<h3>Women&#8217;s 100 Back&#8211;S8<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Stephanie Millward\u00a0<\/strong>of Great Britain finished prelims of the women&#8217;s 100 back in Paralympic Record fashion, stopping the clock at a 1:13.75 to lower the existing record.<\/p>\n<p>The USA qualified second and third with\u00a0<strong>Jessica Long<\/strong> and\u00a0<strong>Elizabeth Marks\u00a0<\/strong>posting times of 1:18.92 and 1:19.97 respectively.<\/p>\n<p>Great Britain&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Stephanie Slater\u00a0<\/strong>turned in a time of 1:20.17 for fourth, ahead of the Australian duo of\u00a0<strong>Lakeisha Patterson\u00a0<\/strong>(1:20.32) and\u00a0<strong>Maddison Elliot\u00a0<\/strong>(1:20.79).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Cleo Keuzer<\/strong> of The Netherlands took seventh with a 1:21.81, while China&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Lu Weiyuan\u00a0<\/strong>was eighth with a 1:22.47.<\/p>\n<h3>Men&#8217;s 50 Free&#8211;S9<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Matthew Wylie<\/strong> of Great Britain finished first in prelims of the men&#8217;s 50 free S9 by squeaking past the 26-second mark. Wylie stopped the clock at a 25.99 for the first place seed, followed by Australia&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Timothy Disken<\/strong> and his time of 26.08.<\/p>\n<p>Spain&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Jose antonio Mari Alcaraz\u00a0<\/strong>finished tihrd with a 26.15, ahead of Japan&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Takura Yamada&#8217;s\u00a0<\/strong>26.20.<\/p>\n<p>The Hungarian duo of\u00a0<strong>Tamas Toth\u00a0<\/strong>(26.22) and\u00a0<strong>Tamas Sors\u00a0<\/strong>(26.32) return as fifth and sixth for tonight&#8217;s finals.<\/p>\n<p>Great Britain&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Ryan Crouch<\/strong> was seventh with a 26.54, while Brazil&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Ruiter Silva\u00a0<\/strong>took eighth with a 26.68.<\/p>\n<h3>Women&#8217;s 50 Free&#8211;S9<\/h3>\n<p>World Record holder\u00a0<strong>Michelle Konkoly\u00a0<\/strong>of the USA flirted with her own World Record as she delivered a 28.36 in prelims of the women&#8217;s 50 free S9, good for a new Paralympic Record. Her current World Record sits at a 28.24 from the USA Paralympic Swim Trials earlier this year.<\/p>\n<p>Australia&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Ellie Cole\u00a0<\/strong>and China&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Lin Ping<\/strong> delivered matching times of 29.26 for the second place seed.<\/p>\n<p>Chinese teammate\u00a0<strong>Wang Jiexin<\/strong> finished fourth with a 29.55, followed by a three-way tie for fifth\u00a0between Spain&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Sarai Gascon<\/strong> and Australia&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Emily Beecroft\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0<strong>Ashleigh Mcconnell<\/strong>. The three stopped the clock simultaneously at a 29.61.<\/p>\n<p>Spain&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Nuria Marques Soto<\/strong> was eighth with a 30.10.<\/p>\n<h3>Men&#8217;s 50 Free&#8211;S3<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Huang Wenpan\u00a0<\/strong>of China smashed the existing Paralympic and World Recods in the men&#8217;s 50 free S3, stopping the clock at a sizzling 40.51. The previous records were\u00a0set in 2008 at the Beijing Paralympic Games at a 42.60 Ukraine&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Dmytro Vynohradets<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Vynohradets, meanwhile, finished second with a 42.92, just off his former World Record.<\/p>\n<p>China&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Du Jianping\u00a0<\/strong>claimed third with a 46.95, followed cloesly by Italy&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Vincenzo Boni&#8217;s\u00a0<\/strong>47.03.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Li Hanhua\u00a0<\/strong>of China was fifth in prelims with a 50.55, while sixth went to Spain&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Miguel Angel Martinez Tajuelo\u00a0<\/strong>(51.09).<\/p>\n<p>Sweden&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Mikael Fredriksson\u00a0<\/strong>(52.26) and Greece&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Ionnis Kostakis\u00a0<\/strong>(55.45) were seventh and eighth.<\/p>\n<h3>Men&#8217;s 200 Free&#8211;S4<\/h3>\n<p>Korea&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Seong Jo Gi\u00a0<\/strong>claimed the first place seed in prelims of the men&#8217;s 200 free with a swift 3:03.64. He was followed to the wall by a trio of 3:05&#8217;s led by Slovaki&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Darko Duric<\/strong> (3:05.03).
