BERKELEY, Feb. 3. FOR the first time in USC coach Mark Schubert's decade-plus collegiate coaching career, and perhaps the first time ever, his teams have lost four consecutive dual meets — two by the women and two by the men.<\/p>\n
The Trojan women, who wre upended by both Stanford and Cal last weekend on the road, saw the same thing happen this weekend to their men's team as SC lost to Stanford by a wide margin Friday in Palo Alto, then traveled across the Bay to get blasted by Cal on Saturday, 168 1\/2-128 1\/2, in a meet that was hardly as close as the score indicates. <\/p>\n
Cal won 10 of 15 events, including both relays and went 2:57.58 to win the 400 sprint, a very quick unshaved effort.<\/p>\n
The meet also saw the debut for Cal of Swiss Olympic sprinter Karol Novy, who won the 200 in 1:38.25 and was second to teammate Anthony Ervin in the 100 (43.56-44.71). Novy swam a national-record 49.58 for the 100 meter free during the Swiss Winter Championships last winter — a time that briefly led the world rankings –but never went any faster.<\/p>\n
Ervin also won the 50 (19.82) and it is looking more and more likely that the American-NCAA records of 19.07-41.80 for these races will soon come a cropper –if not at the Pac-10s the first weekend of March in Long Beach (Belmont Plaza) then certainly by the last weekend of the month at NCAAs in College Station, Tx.<\/p>\n
Cal also received solid performacnes from freshman Alex Lim, a Malaysian Olympian from the Bolles School in Jacksonville who won the 100 back (48.40), 200 back (1:46.43) and led off the Bears' winning 400 medley relay. Teammate Peter Aaronson, a Swedish import, doubled in the breaststrokes (55.72-2:01.34)for the other Bear individual swimming wins.<\/p>\n
SC was led by sophomore Olympian Erik Vendt, who won the 1650 free in 15:01.41; and Hungarian Olympian Tamas Kerekjarto, who doubled in the 200 fly (1:47.13) and 200 IM (1:47.87).<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
