FEDERAL WAY, Washington, August 4. A pair of meet records tumbled during the initial night of swimming at the U.S. Open held in Federal Way.<\/p>\n
Santa Barbara's Katy Freeman clocked a 2:22.51 in the women's 200 breast to lower the meet record. Ashley Wanland of Wisconsin set the record earlier in the day with a 2:25.80 during prelims. Freeman became the ninth-fastest swimmer of all time in the event with the swim. Wanland claimed second in 2:24.29, while Parkway's Elizabeth Smith placed third in 2:27.60.<\/p>\n
In a head-to-head battle with Indiana's Aaron Opell, Nashville's Curtis Lovelace topped the men's 200 breast in 2:10.38 for the meet record. Opell touched in 2:10.63 as both he and Lovelace eclipsed the meet mark of 2:10.67 set by Scott Usher in 2008. Longhorn's Matthew Lowe finished third in 2:12.82.<\/p>\n
Stanford's Elaine Breeden cruised in the women's 200 fly with a winning time of 2:08.07. KING's Andi Taylor touched second in 2:09.60 with Palo Alto Stanford's Yumi So capturing third in 2:10.72.<\/p>\n
Trojan's Hidemasa Sano touched out Kansas City Blazer Bobby Bollier, 1:55.72 to 1:55.87, in the men's 200 fly. Italy's Michele Cosentino rounded out the top three in 1:58.49.<\/p>\n
Coming off a serious illness that forced her to pull out of the U.S. World Championships Trials, The FISH's Kate Ziegler continued her comeback trail with a second-place time of 8:38.50 in the women's 800 free. Longhorn's Amber McDermott raced to victory in the event with an 8:27.90, while Indiana's Jessica White completed the podium with a third-place 8:40.38.<\/p>\n
Athens Bulldog Troy Prinsloo grabbed the men's 1500 free title in 15:10.62, while Longhorn's Michael Klueh finished second in 15:12.32. Badger's Ryan Feeley wound up third in 15:16.79.<\/p>\n
