PHOENIX, Arizona, August 4. ALICIA Mathieu, a five-star recruit from the Class of 2010, is the next subject in this summer’s series of Swimming World College Recruit Rankings Profiles. Mathieu hails from Marlborough, Ct. She attends Rham High, and swims for SoNoCo Swimming.<\/p>\n
Mathieu maintains her profile in the Swimming World College Recruit Rankings powered by Take Your Marks, and has the potential to be an impact recruit in middle to distance freestyle.<\/p>\n
Her top long course meters times are: 400 free 4:19.29; 800 free 8:44.99. She also would have qualified to compete in the 1650-yard free at last year’s NCAA Division I Championships with a 16:10.61 as her top time, and has a B cut time in the 500-yard free (4:47.62.<\/p>\n
When and where did you start swimming?
\nI started taking swimming lessons when I was a baby. When I was 8 years old, I swam on a team at the summer pool club in Glastonbury, Conn. That fall, I joined a USA Swimming team. I have been swimming with SONOCO since I was 12.<\/p>\n
Who would you name as the most influential person and coach in your swimming career?
\nMy mom and coach, Bill Ball<\/p>\n
What, to this point, is your best moment in the sport and why?
\nMy best moment was representing the USA for the National Junior Team. It was an amazing feeling to do well and swim for my country.<\/p>\n
Walk us through a day of practice:
\nA 45 minute warmup set, usually a 3,000 yard aerobic set, followed by either a sprint set or kick set. Two days a week we do 30 to 40 minutes of dry land.<\/p>\n
What is your favorite set?
\nAny distance set because I love to race people on my team and the clock to see how fast I can go.<\/p>\n
What is your least favorite set?
\n20x100s from the blocks on 2:00 best effort followed by 20x50s on 1:00<\/p>\n
What are your short-term goals?
\nTo go best times in all the events I swim.<\/p>\n
What are your long-term goals?
\nTo be top 8 at the next Olympic Trials.<\/p>\n
What colleges are you interested in so far?
\nUniversity of Florida, Auburn University, University of Georgia and University of California, Berkeley.<\/p>\n
What has the recruiting process been like so far, now that you are allowed to be called by coaches?
\nIt’s been exciting to talk to coaches and to start narrowing down where I want to go to college. I have been finding the process a little stressful but I know it’ll pay off in the end. I am looking forward to my recruiting trips and getting to know the swimmers and coaches better.<\/p>\n
Is there anything else interesting that you’d like our readers to know about you?
\nMy favorite time of the year is the summer because I love the warm weather, tanning and the ocean!<\/p>\n
