VANCOUVER, B.C., Canada, Feb. 3. A LIMITED roster of men and women from Arizona State's swimming teams captured first and second place, respectively, at the University of British Columbia Colleges' Cup at the UBC Aquatic Centre in Vancouver, B.C., Canada Saturday.<\/p>\n
The ASU men completed the two-day tournament with 525 points to top UBC (486), University of Victoria (429) and Simon Fraser University (393). The women totaled 496 points, finishing runner-up to UBC (525), but ahead of SFU (417) and UV (415).<\/p>\n
Swum in a short course meter pool, the 17 swimming events consisted of a 'fast' heat with higher scoring (20 – 17 – 15 – 14 – 13 – 12 – 11 10) and a lesser scored 'slow' heat (13 – 11 – 10 – 9 – 8 – 7 – 6
\n– 5). With rosters of 10 swimmers per team, each school was allowed one lane per heat.<\/p>\n
Taking first-place points in the first ('fast') heat of the 100-meter freestyle in 50.82, Scott VonSchoff became one of two swimmers to set a Colleges' Cup meet record. In addition to that performance, VonSchoff won the first heat of the 200m free in 1:51.22, while
\nteammate Anders Lyrbring took first in the second heat with a time of 1:51.15.<\/p>\n
In the 50m free, VonSchoff won the second heat in 23.44, as ASU's Simon MacDonald won the first heat in 23.46.<\/p>\n
The other meet record was established by UV's Jason Hunter in the 100m breaststroke. Although ASU's Otto Hinks dipped under the previous record of 1:03.82 with his runner-up time of 1:03.65, Hunter's 1:03.38 took first-place and the meet record.<\/p>\n
The ASU men were absolutely dominant in the relays. With eight total heats for four relays (200m, 400m free and 200m, 400m medley), the Sun Devils captured first-place each and every time. <\/p>\n
The Sun Devils' top performer was junior Riley Mants. A native of Winnipeg, Canada, Mants won the first heat of the women's 100m breast in 1:11.39, as well as the 200m variety in 2:32.23. In the second heat of the backstroke events, Lindsey Smart claimed the top spot in the 100m in 1:07.16 and in the 200m in 2:21.51.
\nSwimming in the second heats of the breast events, Josie Jedick touched the wall first in both, with a 100m time of 1:13.89 and a 200m time of 2:37.13. Alicia Wheelock was another second-heat winner, claiming the 100m butterfly in 1:05.44.<\/p>\n
The Sun Devils have but one dual meet left before the post season. Saturday, Feb. 10, ASU will make the short trip south to face state rival Arizona in Tucson.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
