2016 Junior Pan Pacific Championships, Day 1 Finals – Results<\/a><\/p>\nWomen’s 200 Free FINAL:<\/h3>\n
China’s\u00a0Li Bingjie\u00a0<\/strong>maintained her spot atop the competition board in finals of the women’s 200 free. Li battled some strong competition from Canada’s\u00a0Rebecca Smith<\/strong> but was able to hold her speed at the end for first and a time of 1:58.23. Smith picked up second with a time of 1:58.90.<\/p>\nFinishing right on the heels of Smith was\u00a0Isabel Ivey<\/strong> of the USA, stopping the clock at a 1:58.94 to scratch 1.02 seconds off her prelims time of 1:59.96.<\/p>\nA trio of 1:59’s highlighted the middle of the finalists with\u00a0Mary-Sophie Harvey<\/strong> of Canada leading the charge with a 1:59.48.<\/p>\nThe USA’s\u00a0Lauren Pitzer\u00a0<\/strong>and Australia’s\u00a0Ariarne Titmus<\/strong> kept a tight race, finishing a slim .07 seconds apart with times of 1:59.83 and 1:59.90 respectively.<\/p>\nChina’s\u00a0Liu Zixuan<\/strong> picked up seventh with a time of 2:00.24, just ahead of Japan’s\u00a0Rio Shirai’s\u00a0<\/strong>2:01.94.<\/p>\nMen’s 200 Free FINAL:<\/h3>\n
The men’s 200 free final was highlighted by the Australian duo of\u00a0Jack Cartwright\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0Louis Townsend.\u00a0<\/strong>The two held a tight race, finishing a shy .05 seconds apart. At the end it was Cartwright who got his hand to the wall first touching in a time of 1:47.68 in Junior Pan Pac record-fashion. His time takes down the former record of 1:48.29 set in 2014 by\u00a0Townley Haas<\/strong>.<\/p>\nTownsend finished a close second with a 1:47.73, touching more than a second ahead of the competition.<\/p>\n
The USA’s\u00a0Drew Kibler<\/strong> turned in a time of 1:49.04 for the bronze, shaving .77 seconds off his prelims time of 1:49.81.<\/p>\nJuran Mizohata<\/strong> of Japan and\u00a0Sean Grieshop<\/strong> of the USA battled to the finish, posting times .22 seconds apart. Mizohata won out with a final 1:51.20 for fourth over Grieshop’s 1:51.42.<\/p>\nCanadian teammates\u00a0Ian MacKinnon\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0Brian Palaschuk\u00a0<\/strong>finished sixth and seventh respectively with times of 1:51.96 and 1:52.22.<\/p>\nTomoya Takeuchi<\/strong> of Japan rounded out the top eight with a 1:52.57.<\/p>\nWomen’s 100 Back FINAL [UPDDATED]:<\/h3>\n
The women’s 100 back proved to be a race to the finish with Australia’s\u00a0Minna Atherton\u00a0<\/strong>and the USA’s\u00a0Lucie Nordmann<\/strong> battling to the very touch. While Atherton touched .10 seconds ahead of Nordmann with a 1:00.45 to Nordmann’s 1:00.55, the young Aussie was disqualified for having her toes in the gutter on the start.<\/p>\nAtherton’s disqualification was later overturned earning her the gold and a new Junior Pan Pacs meet record, moving Nordmann to second.<\/p>\n
Atherton’s overturned DQ moves her Aussie teammate\u00a0Kaylee McKeown<\/strong>\u00a0to third with a final time of 1:01.01, just ahead of the USA’s\u00a0Alex Walsh<\/strong> and her time of 1:01.10.<\/p>\nCanada’s\u00a0Danielle Hanus\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0Ingrid Wilm\u00a0<\/strong>picked up the fifth and sixth place spots with times of 1:01.81 and 1:02.06 respectively.<\/p>\nComing off an eighth place finish in the 200 free, Japan’s\u00a0Rio Shirai<\/strong> delivered a 1:02.16 for seventh.<\/p>\nNew Zealand’s\u00a0Gabrielle Fa’Amausili<\/strong> finished eighth overall with a 1:02.39.<\/p>\nMen’s 100 Back FINAL:<\/h3>\n
The USA continued to reign the men’s 100 back final with a 1-2 finish.\u00a0Michael Taylor<\/strong> jumped to an early and decisive lead, holding off teammate\u00a0Cameron Craig<\/strong> who gained considerable ground on Taylor in the finish. Taylor stopped the clock at a 54.21 for the gold, while Craig earned silver with a 54.74.<\/p>\nAustralia’s\u00a0Leon MacCallister<\/strong> finished third overall with a 56.14, just ahead of Mexico’s\u00a0Andy Song<\/strong> and his final time of 56.85.<\/p>\nThe Canadian duo of\u00a0Tai Long Singh\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0Matthew Mac\u00a0<\/strong>finished fifth and sixth respectively with close times of 57.05 and 57.17.<\/p>\nAustralia’s\u00a0Bradley Woodward\u00a0<\/strong>picked up seventh with a 57.64 and Singapore’s\u00a0Francis Fong\u00a0<\/strong>(58.52) was eighth.<\/p>\nWomen’s 200 Fly FINAL:<\/h3>\n
Cassidy Bayer<\/strong> of the USA surged ahead of the competition in finals of the women’s 200 fly and never looked back. The young star had a solid lead built when she turned at the 100 and did nothing but build upon her lead as she continued towards the finish, stopping the clock at a 2:08.48 and a new Junior Pan Pacs meet record. Bayer’s time takes down the former record of 2:09.02 set by Japan’s\u00a0Haruno Ito<\/strong> in 2014.<\/p>\nAustralia’s\u00a0Laura Taylor<\/strong> finished second overall with a 2:12.20, just ahead of Japan’s\u00a0Maia Nishimura<\/strong> and her time of 2:12.97.<\/p>\nThe USA’s\u00a0Ruby Martin<\/strong> entered tonight’s final as the top seed but slipped to an unfortunate fourth, adding more than a second to her prelims time to finish with a 2:12.99.<\/p>\nJapan’s\u00a0Anna Sasaki\u00a0<\/strong>took fifth overall with a 2:13.09, while the Canadian duo of\u00a0Mabel Zavaros\u00a0<\/strong>(2:14.00) and\u00a0Sarah Darcell\u00a0<\/strong>(2:14.12) held a tight race for sixth and seventh.<\/p>\nEighth went to\u00a0Jing Wen Quah<\/strong> and her time of 2:16.81.<\/p>\nMen’s 200 Fly FINAL:<\/h3>\n
Finals of the men’s 200 fly were highlighted by Japanese duo of\u00a0Nao Horomura<\/strong> and\u00a0Yuya S<\/strong>akamoto<\/b> who turned in a pair of 1:57’s for a 1-2 finish. Horomura took first with a 1:57.01 over Nakamoto’s 1:57.90.<\/p>\nThe USA followed with a duo of their own for the third and fourth place finishes.\u00a0Sam Pomajevich<\/strong> took a decisive third with a 1:58.22, while teammate\u00a0Will Riggs<\/strong> picked up fourth with a 2:00.26.<\/p>\nAustralia’s\u00a0Jacob Whale<\/strong> finished fifth overall with a time of 2:00.47, while Canada’s\u00a0Colin Gilbert<\/strong> picked up sixth with a 2:01.57.<\/p>\nLewis Clareburt<\/strong> of New Zealand grabbed seventh with a 2:03.56 and Singapore’s\u00a0Donovan Lee<\/strong> was eighth with a 2:05.03.<\/p>\nWomen’s 800 Free FINAL:<\/h3>\n
Not long after topping the competition in the women’s 200 free final\u00a0Li Bingjie<\/strong> was back in the water for the women’s 800 free. Li turned in a time of 8:28.12 to secure a second gold medal in her first day at the 2016 Junior Pan Pacs.<\/p>\nPicking up second was\u00a0Joy Field<\/strong> of the USA with a final time of 8:31.21, dropping a sizzling 4.85 seconds off her entry time of 8:36.06.<\/p>\nThe large time drops kept happening with Canada’s\u00a0Olivia Anderson<\/strong> scraping 5.50 seconds off her entry time to finish third with a time of 8:32.84, while the USA’s\u00a0Madison Homovich<\/strong> shaved off 3.31 seconds for fourth and a final 8:36.66.<\/p>\nAustralia’s\u00a0Ariarne Titmus<\/strong> picked up fifth place with a time of 8:37.50.<\/p>\nThe USA’s\u00a0Erica Sullivan\u00a0<\/strong>turned in a time of 8:42.75 for sixth, just ahead of Japan’s\u00a0Aoi Nakamura’s\u00a0<\/strong>8:43.45.<\/p>\nMikayla Messer<\/strong> of Australia completed the top eight with a final 8:44.72.<\/p>\nMen’s 1500 Free FINAL:<\/h3>\n
Robert Finke<\/strong> of the USA jumped to an early lead in the men’s 1500 free final and never looked back, finishing more than fifteen seconds ahead of the competition with a final 15:05.29 and soaring past the Junior Pan Pacs meet record of 15:10.07 set in 2014 by Australia’s\u00a0Mack Horton.<\/strong><\/p>\nTeammate\u00a0Andrew Abruzzo<\/strong> picked up the silver medal with a final time of 15:20.62, also distancing himself from the competition by close to seven seconds.<\/p>\nJapan’s\u00a0Atsuya Yoshida\u00a0<\/strong>finished third overall with a 15:27.61, while Australia’s\u00a0Jacob Vincent<\/strong> grabbed fourth with a 15:30.10.<\/p>\nThe field narrowed slightly as Japan’s\u00a0Koki Takahashi<\/strong> and Australia’s\u00a0Nathan Robinson<\/strong> posted times less than two seconds apart for fifth and sixth respectively.
