Their \u201cAngels\u201d free routine scored 99.1333 points on Friday to bring their total score to 196.1439 following their technical routine on Thursday. While the Chinese team scored an impressive 97.3667 on their \u201cFinding Dragon\u201d free routine, they were still three points behind the Russians in their total score. The Chinese finished with 192.9841 to claim their second straight silver medal. In third were the Japanese, who scored a 95.433 in the free routine to bring their total score to 189.2056. Earlier in the meet, the Russian duo of <\/span><b>Natalia Ishchenko<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><b>Svetlana Romashina <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/russias-ishchenko-and-romashina-collect-synchro-free-routine-gold-once-again\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">defended their gold medal from 2012 with a near perfect routine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. That bronze was Brazil\u2019s first swimming medal at these Games. <\/span><b>Van Rouwendaal <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">also competed in pool events last week, but did not make any finals. <\/span><b>Van Rouwendaal\u2019s <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">gold was the Netherlands first swimming medal at these Games, and makes five straight Olympics taking away a gold medal in swimming. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/ferry-weertman-wins-10k-open-water-gold-medal-in-stunning-photo-finish\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fellow Netherlands swimmer <\/span><b>Ferry Weertman <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">also captured gold in the 10K event<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to make it a Dutch sweep of the event, albeit in a much closer race. With about 100 meters to go, Greek swimmer <\/span><b>Spiros Gianniotis<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> began to pull away from the pack with <\/span><b>Weertman <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in hot pursuit. Both swimmers charged to the finish and touched in matching times of 1:52:59.8. <\/span><b>Weertman <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ended up being announced the winner by less than a tenth of a second. That gave China their seventh diving gold medal this Olympics; the only event they did not earn gold in was the synchronized springboard, where they earned a bronze medal. <\/span><b>Tom Daley, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the 2012 bronze medalist in the event, failed to make it through semi-finals <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/mens-platform-preliminaries-conclude-with-tom-daley-leading\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">after leading through the preliminaries<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. In the women\u2019s platform event, China\u2019s <\/span><b>Ren Qian<\/b> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/chinese-dominance-continues-in-womens-platform\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">grabbed gold in her first Olympic appearance<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. She was joined on the podium by her teammate, <\/span><b>Si Yajie<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, who won silver and <\/span><b>Meaghan Benfeito<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of Canada who took the bronze. The men\u2019s 3 meter springboard may have been the most unpredictable event of the entire meet, with the reigning Olympic medalist<\/span><b> Ilia Sakharov <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">locked out of the finals after failing a dive in semis and China\u2019s <\/span><b>He Chao, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">one of the favorites for a medal, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/olympic-diving-recap-shocking-mens-preliminary-results\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">finishing 21st out of prelims<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. While it was originally reported that four U.S. swimmers (<\/span><b>Ryan Lochte, Gunnar Bentz, Jimmy Feigen, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><b>Jack Conger<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) were robbed at gunpoint coming back to the athlete\u2019s village following a party, throughout the week it became apparent that the swimmers\u2019 initial story was a lie.
