TALLAHASSEE, Fla., Feb. 3. THE LSU men's swimming and diving team trounced the Florida State Seminoles, 146-97, on Saturday, while the Lady Tigers came away with a, 137-106, loss versus the Seminoles at the Bim Stults Aquatic Center in Tallahassee, Fla. The match marked the final dual-meet of the season for both Tiger teams.<\/p>\n
"The men's team looked really good today," said LSU head swimming coach Jeff Cavana. "We were strong enough to pull it out, and it was a big win on the road that will definitely give us some momentum for the upcoming SEC Championships. The women's team just lost due to our lack of depth. We swam awesome in some events, but in the other ones we were too tired to compete up to our potential."<\/p>\n
With Saturday's win, the Tigers improved to 6-3, while the LSU women's team will end the dual-meet season with a record of 6-5. The Seminoles' men's squad dropped to an overall record of 6-4, but the Florida State women picked up a huge victory in their final home meet of the year.<\/p>\n
The top performers in Saturday's victory over the Seminoles were Ken (Buzz) Kuhn, Ross Buffington, and diver Corey Fox. Kuhn accumulated wins in both
\nthe 50 and 100-yard freestyle events, while Ross did the same in the 500 and 1000-yard competitions.<\/p>\n
On the ladies side, LSU junior Mandy Leach headlined the entire meet with wins in the 200-yard freestyle, the 200-individual medley, as well as the 100-yard butterfly competition. Donna Leslie, a freshman from South Africa, accounted for the Lady Tigers' other swimming victory in the 500-yard freestyle.<\/p>\n
No matter what the outcome of the swimming events, the LSU divers always put on an unbelievable show. Jaime Watkins, the 2000 NCAA one-meter diving champion took both of the women's one and three-meter springboard events, while the Tigers' Corey Fox led LSU to a sweep in both competitions.<\/p>\n
"Our divers did really well today. They are getting better and better as the season wears on, and hopefully this performance will help us at SEC's,"
\nsaid LSU diving coach Scott Reich. "Both the men and women were great, but especially on the women's side where we took five of the top-six spots in each event."<\/p>\n
The LSU men's and women's swimming and diving teams will next be in action February 21-24, as they travel to Tuscaloosa, Ala., for the 2001 SEC Swimming and Diving championships.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
