But it was the swim by two underdogs from North America that take this week\u2019s Performance of the Week. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/simone-manuel-penny-oleksiak-tie-for-gold-in-historic-100-free-final\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Touching the wall in a new Olympic Record of 52.70<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (and tying for the gold medal), <\/span><b>Simone Manuel <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><b>Penny Oleksiak <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">defied all expectations to break two major barriers: <\/span><b>Manuel<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the first African American woman to win an individual medal in swimming at the Olympic Games, and <\/span><b>Oleksiak, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the youngest Olympic champion in Canadian history at just 16 and the first Canadian woman to take home four medals at an Olympic Games.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Heading into the Olympic final for the women\u2019s 100 freestyle, all eyes were on Australian <\/span><b>Cate Campbell, <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/world-record-for-cate-campbell-in-100-freestyle\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">who just weeks prior to the start of the Games had broken the world record<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and seemed to be one of the surest bets to take gold in the event in Rio. But as they say, if you have a lane you have a chance, and while <\/span><b>Campbell <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">took the race out like a rocket <\/span><b>Manuel <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><b>Oleksiak <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">stuck to their race plans. <\/span><b>Manuel <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">was third at the 50 (25.24) while <\/span><b>Oleksiak <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">was seventh (25.70), and while <\/span><b>Campbell <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">faltered with 25 meters to go the Canadian and the American surged to take the gold. <\/span><b>Manuel <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><b>Oleksiak\u2019s <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">times were American and Canadian records respectively, while <\/span><b>Oleksiak\u2019s <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">time was also a new junior world record. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The last gold medal tie at the Olympic Games came sixteen years ago, when <\/span><b>Gary Hall Jr. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><b>Anthony Ervin <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tied for gold in the 50 freestyle, and ironically the last time an American woman won the 100 freestyle was in a tie in 1984 between Americans <\/span><b>Nancy Hogshead<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><b>Carrie Steinseifer<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><b>Oleksiak\u2019s <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">gold medal is also the first for a Canadian woman since those 1984 Games, where <\/span><b>Anne Ottenbrite<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> won gold in the 200 breast. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/for-simone-manuel-and-penny-oleksiak-a-shared-gold-and-intertwined-history\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With these barrier breaking performances<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, these two women will inspire swimmers across the continent to go out and pursue their dreams against whatever odds they see, and that deserves to be celebrated. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Congratulations <\/span><b>Simone Manuel <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and<\/span><b> Penny Oleksiak <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">on earning <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Swimming World\u2019s <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Performance of the Week!<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The 2016 Rio Olympic Games featured numerous world records, barriers broken, and Olympic history made.
