CORVALLIS, Ore., Feb. 2. THE WASHINGTON State University women\u2019s swim team defeated Oregon State University 138-124 at Stevens Natatorium Friday.<\/p>\n
WSU won eight-of-14 events including both relays to improve its record to 8-3 (2-1 Pac-10) this season.<\/p>\n
"We had a lot better team atmosphere this weekend," WSU assistant coach Suzanne Yee said. "Our swimmers got together and decided they wanted to race and
\nwanted to win the meet. You could tell they really wanted to win it as a team."<\/p>\n
Andree-Anne LeRoy, a freshman from Nanaimo, B.C., Canada, won three individual events for the Cougars, and helped lead the 200 medley relay team to victory.
\nWith the score tied at 113 after 12 events, LeRoy\u2019s win in the 13th event of the day, the 400 individual medley, put WSU ahead in the meet for good. Her
\ntime of 4 minutes 28.50 seconds in the race also moved LeRoy into second place on the school\u2019s all-time list for that event. LeRoy earlier won the 100 backstroke in a time of 58.56 seconds and the 200 backstroke in 2 minutes 5.73 seconds.<\/p>\n
With the Cougars ahead 125-120 heading into the final event of the evening, the 200 freestyle relay, the WSU team of Taryn Ternent (Edenvale, South Africa), Rachel Dong (Paramount, Calif.), Lindsay Henahan (Rochester, N.Y.) and Christina Swanson (Seattle, Wash.) sealed the meet with crucial victory in a time of 1 minute 36.19 seconds. <\/p>\n
Continuing her stellar season for the Cougars, freshman Taryn Ternent (Edenvale, South Africa), won the 50 freestyle in 24.12 seconds and the 100 freestyle in 52.37 seconds. <\/p>\n
Also swimming well for WSU, freshman Rachel Dong (Paramount, Calif.) won the 100 butterfly with a time of 56.93 seconds, and swam on both winning relay
\nteams. Dong also placed second in the 200 freestyle. <\/p>\n
The Cougars will conclude their regular season tomorrow with another dual meet against Oregon State beginning at 11 a.m. at Stevens Natatorium in Corvallis.<\/p>\n
