While she left the London Olympic Games without any medals, <\/span><b>Sjostrom <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">worked the past four years to climb back to the top, winning the 100 butterfly in world record time at last years World Championships and setting herself up as the favorite for these Olympic Games. This time she delivered in spades, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/sarah-sjostrom-downs-100-fly-world-record-world-junior-record-for-oleksiak\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">winning on the second night of the meet in the 100 butterfly in 55.48<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which broke her own world record. That made <\/span><b>Sjostrom <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the first Swedish woman to win an Olympic gold medal in swimming and threw off the weight of the expectations that were placed on her shoulders seven years ago. Using his country\u2019s history of success in the event as motivation to propel him to gold, <\/span><b>Ryan Murphy <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">extended the U.S.\u2019s streak in both events. Starting with the 100 backstroke, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/ryan-murphy-keeps-american-streak-alive-with-100-backstroke-olympic-record\/\" target=\"_blank\"><b>Murphy <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">won the event in 51.97<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to win America\u2019s sixth straight gold medal in the event. That time broke the Olympic record set by <strong>Matt<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span><b>Grevers <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in 2012 and was just off of American <\/span><b>Aaron Piersol\u2019s <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2009 world record. He continued a second American streak in the 200 backstroke, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/ryan-murphy-continues-american-dominance-in-200-back\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">winning the event in 1:53.62<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> over Australia&#8217;s <\/span><b>Mitch Larkin. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And in his final swim of the Olympic Games, leading off the 400 medley relay for the United States, <\/span><b>Murphy <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">was able to break <\/span><b>Aaron Piersol\u2019s <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">elusive world record in the 100 backstroke. The Cal senior led off with a 51.85, giving the U.S. a sizable lead <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/usa-men-continue-undefeated-400-medley-streak-new-olympic-record-for-usa\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">that helped them toward a new Olympic Record of 3:27.95<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Her time also broke <\/span><b>Ye Shiwen\u2019s <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">world and Olympic records that were set at the 2012 London Olympic Games. The Iron Lady went on to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/katinka-hosszu-collects-second-gold-medal-of-rio-olympics-with-100-back-victory\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">win the 100 backstroke (58.45)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and 200 IM, the latter in an <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/katinka-hosszu-edges-past-200-im-olympic-record-for-third-individual-gold\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Olympic record time of 2:06.58<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to hold off a fast closing <\/span><b>Siobhan-Marie O\u2019Connor.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The Hungarian<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/maya-dirado-upsets-katinka-hosszu-for-victory-in-the-200-back\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">finished the meet with a silver medal to <\/span><b>Maya DiRado <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in the 200 backstroke<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, finishing just .06 behind the American with her third consecutive 2:06 flat swim. Continuing her streak of being unbeaten in individual international finals, <\/span><b>Ledecky<\/b> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/katie-ledecky-etches-her-name-in-history-by-completing-sweep-of-the-200-400-800-freestyles\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">became just the second woman ever to sweep the 200, 400, and 800 meter freestyle events<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> at an Olympic Games (the only other woman is American <\/span><b>Debbie Meyer, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">who pulled off the feat at the 1968 Olympics). That brings his Olympic medal count to a staggering 28 (of which 23 are gold medals), which makes him the most decorated Olympian in history and cements his place as the greatest Olympian of all-time.
