Great Britain swam their four fastest swimmers in prelims to take the top seed entering finals.\u00a0<strong>Michael Phelps\u00a0<\/strong>was set for his Olympic finale and was not planning on exiting with anything short of gold.<\/p>\n<p>Regardless of the final outcome, a significant mark was made in the first minute of the event.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ryan Murphy\u00a0<\/strong>opened the relay for the Americans with a world record in the 100 meter backstroke. The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/ryan-murphy-keeps-american-streak-alive-with-100-backstroke-olympic-record\/\" target=\"_blank\">individual gold medalist<\/a> touched in 51.85, faster than the Olympic record of 51.97 he posted on Monday night.<\/p>\n<p>Murphy&#8217;s 51.85 was .09 faster than\u00a0<strong>Aaron Peirsol<\/strong>&#8216;s 51.94, swum at the end of the super suit era in Indianapolis in July 2009.<\/p>\n<p>Peirsol&#8217;s splits:\u00a025.35, 26.59<\/p>\n<p>Murphy&#8217;s splits: 25.13, 26.72<\/p>\n<p>Murphy was followed by\u00a0<strong>Cody Miller<\/strong>, Phelps, and\u00a0<strong>Nathan Adrian\u00a0<\/strong>who combined for a gold medal winning, Olympic record time of 3:27.95.<\/p>\n<p><em>Full results can be found\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/vmrw8k5h.tinifycdn.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/Night-8-Results.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The stage was set for an exciting men&#8217;s 4&#215;100 medley relay final to close out the pool swimming of the 2016 Rio Olympic Games.
