\tCLEVELAND, Ohio, Feb. 2. THE UNIVERSITY of Notre Dame swimming and diving team (6-2) won its fourth straight dual meet with a 136-102 victory at Cleveland State on Friday, Feb. 2. The Irish claimed seven individual wins on the day, led by senior Ryan Verlin (Rye, NY) and diver Andy Maggio (Cincinnati, Ohio).<\/p>\n
Verlin won both the 200 individual medley (1:56.24) in the fifth event of the meet, then turned right around and won the next event, the 200 butterfly in 1:53.35.
\nMaggio swept both the one- and three-meter diving events, posting impressive point totals of 350.48 and 309.00, respectively. Herb Huesman (Cincinnati, Ohio) finished second in the one meter competition, while
\nsophomore Joe Miller (South Bend, Ind.) became the third Irish diver to qualify for the 2001 BIG EAST Championship with 271.28 points in the one-meter event.<\/p>\n
Also qualifying for the 2001 BIG EAST meet were sophomore John Hudson (Alpharetta, Ga.) in the 200 backstroke (1:55.42), senior Brian Skorney (Staten Island, NY) in the 200 backstroke (1:55.68) and Michael
\nFlanagan (San Diego, Calif.) in the 1,650 freestyle (16:17.82).<\/p>\n
Other event winners for the Irish in the meet were junior Jonathan Pierce (Newburgh, Ind.) in the 200 freestyle, freshman Adam Cahill (Richmond, Ky.) in the 50 freestyle (21.72), sophomore Clay Miller (Mead,
\nWa.) in the 500 freestyle (4:43.59).<\/p>\n
