He was followed by Hungary&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Laszlo Cseh<\/strong>, who qualified second in 51.52.<\/p>\n<p>Cseh entered with the top time in the world this year, and still holds that with a 50.91 from the European Championships. But after entering with the world&#8217;s best time in the 200 fly as well, Cseh finished seventh, more than three seconds slower than the 1:52.91 he put up in May.<\/p>\n<p>After a disappointing 200 butterfly, and then being the last one off the blocks this morning,\u00a0<strong>Tom Shields\u00a0<\/strong>of the USA won his heat and qualified third for semifinals in a 51.58.\u00a0Phelps will return fourth after touching in 51.60.<\/p>\n<p>Phelps admitted Thursday night that he had been aiming for a spot in the\u00a0<em>second<\/em> semifinal as to give him more recovery\u00a0time\u00a0after the 200 IM final. But Phelps, in his own words, &#8220;screwed up,&#8221; and he will instead swim out of lane five in the first semifinal tonight.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Mehdy Metella\u00a0<\/strong>of France stopped the clock in 51.71 for fifth. Just behind him was\u00a0Italy&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Piero Codia <\/strong>who\u00a0will be sixth after swimming a 51.72.\u00a0<strong>Chad le Clos\u00a0<\/strong>of South Africa\u00a0was a 51.75.<\/p>\n<p>Great Britain&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>James Guy\u00a0<\/strong>took off over the second 50 to tie with China&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Zhuhao Li <\/strong>for the\u00a0eighth spot with a 51.78.\u00a0Guy is more typically known for his middle-distance freestyle skills, but he also regularly swims butterfly on his country&#8217;s medley relays.<\/p>\n<p>Poland&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Konrad Czerniak\u00a0<\/strong>and Australia&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>David Morgan <\/strong>tie for tenth in 51.81. Morgan&#8217;s teammate\u00a0<strong>Grant Irvine\u00a0<\/strong>(51.84) followed. Russia&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Aleksandr Sadovnikov\u00a0<\/strong>(51.91) is 13th.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Santo Condorelli\u00a0<\/strong>took nearly a half second from his seed time, swimming in heat two.
