Competition begins at 1 p.m. local time (12 p.m. EST\/9 a.m. PST) Hit refresh for all the latest coverage.<\/p>\n<p>Heat sheets are available\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/swimmingworld.azureedge.net\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/day-6-prelims-heat-sheets.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Scheduled Events:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Men\u2019s 50 Freestyle<\/li>\n<li>Women\u2019s 800 Freestyle<\/li>\n<li>Men\u2019s 100 Butterfly<\/li>\n<li>Women\u2019s 200 Backstroke<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Men&#8217;s 50 Freestyle<\/h3>\n<p>Ukraine&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Andrii Govorov\u00a0<\/strong>led the way by just over a tenth this morning, blasting his way to a 21.49 in prelims of the 50 freestyle.<\/p>\n<p>American record holder\u00a0<strong>Nathan Adrian\u00a0<\/strong>swam a 21.61 this morning, fresh off his 100 freestyle bronze medal. His teammate\u00a0<strong>Anthony Ervin\u00a0<\/strong>earned Olympic gold in this event in 2000. This morning the veteran was long into the wall, but finished in 21.63 for the third seed tonight.<\/p>\n<p>France&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Florent Manaudou\u00a0<\/strong>stopped the clock in 21.72 to qualify fourth.\u00a0<strong>Cameron McEvoy\u00a0<\/strong>of Australia finished seventh in last night&#8217;s 100 freestyle final. He bounced back to win his prelims heat in 21.80. Just .01 behind was Russia&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Vladimir Morozov\u00a0<\/strong>in 27.81.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ben Proud\u00a0<\/strong>of Great Britain and\u00a0<strong>Santo Condorelli\u00a0<\/strong>of Canada\u00a0tied in 21.83 in heat nine. The two swimmers head to semifinals in seventh.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Luca Dotto\u00a0<\/strong>of Italy posted a 21.87 this morning.\u00a0<strong>Kristian Gkolomeev\u00a0<\/strong>of Greece and Brazil&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Bruno Fratus\u00a0<\/strong>both touched in 21.93 this morning to tie for the tenth seed. Just .01 behind was\u00a0<strong>Bradley Edward Tandy\u00a0<\/strong>of South Africa\u00a0in 21.94. Brazil&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Italo Duarte\u00a0<\/strong>snagged the 13th seed with a 21.96.<\/p>\n<p>In another tie, Japan&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Shinri Shioura\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0<strong>Simonas Bilis\u00a0<\/strong>of Lithuania take the 14th seed with their matching 22.01s.<\/p>\n<p>Romania&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Norbert Trandafir\u00a0<\/strong>will complete tonight&#8217;s semifinals with a 22.10.<\/p>\n<h3>Women&#8217;s 800 Freestyle<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Katie Ledecky\u00a0<\/strong>held back her legs this morning in prelims of the 800 freestyle. While she never neared\u00a0her own world record of 8:06.68, Ledecky did take down the Olympic record with her final time of 8:12.86.\u00a0The Olympic record stood at 8:14.10, swum by Great Britain&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Rebecca Adlington\u00a0<\/strong>in 2008. At the time it was a world record. Ledecky then upset Adlington at home in 2012, but did not take the mark. With this morning&#8217;s easy race, Ledecky is setting herself up to be the third American woman to repeat gold in the event.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Boglarka Kapas\u00a0<\/strong>of Hungary recorded the second fastest time in prelims with her 8:19.43. That swim came as a result of a close race with\u00a0<strong>Jazz Carlin\u00a0<\/strong>of Great Britain, the silver medalist in the 400 freestyle. Carlin will take the third seed in 8:19.67.<\/p>\n<p>American\u00a0<strong>Leah Smith\u00a0<\/strong>recovered from a late night on the gold medal winning relay to post the fourth best time of the morning in 8:21.43.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Lotte Friis\u00a0<\/strong>of Denmark jumped out to an early lead in the third heat and held on to win that heat in 8:22.54. On her heels was\u00a0<strong>Jessica Ashwood\u00a0<\/strong>of Australia in 8:22.57.<\/p>\n<p>Germnay&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Sarah Kohler\u00a0<\/strong>takes the seventh spot in 8:24.65.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Mireia Belmonte Garcia\u00a0<\/strong>took out the second heat this morning and swam on her own. The Spaniard who already has two Olympic medals from this Games will be the eighth seed for finals with an 8:25.55.<\/p>\n<p>New Zealand&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Lauren Boyle\u00a0<\/strong>posted an 8:25.84 and will not make the final, finishing ninth.<\/p>\n<h3>Men&#8217;s 100 Butterfly<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Joseph Schooling\u00a0<\/strong>of Singapore held off\u00a0<strong>Michael Phelps\u00a0<\/strong>in the final heat to post the fastest time of the morning in 51.41.\u00a0<strong>Laszlo Cseh\u00a0<\/strong>of Hungary entered with the top time in the world this year. This morning he touched in 51.52 for the second seed.<\/p>\n<p>After a disappointing 200 butterfly, and then being the last one off the blocks this morning,\u00a0<strong>Tom Shields\u00a0<\/strong>of the USA won his heat and qualified third for semifinals in a 51.58.\u00a0Phelps will return fourth after touching in 51.60.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Mehdy Metella\u00a0<\/strong>of France stopped the clock in 51.71 for fifth. Just behind him was\u00a0Italy&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Piero Codia <\/strong>who\u00a0will be sixth after swimming a 51.72.\u00a0<strong>Chad le Clos\u00a0<\/strong>of South Africa\u00a0was a 51.75.<\/p>\n<p>Great Britain&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>James Guy\u00a0<\/strong>took off over the second 50 to snag the eighth spot with a 51.78. He&#8217;ll share that with China&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Zhuhao Li\u00a0<\/strong>who also clocked a 51.78 three heats later.<\/p>\n<p>Poland&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Konrad Czerniak\u00a0<\/strong>and Australia&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>David Morgan <\/strong>tie for tenth in 51.81. Morgan&#8217;s teammate\u00a0<strong>Grant Irvine\u00a0<\/strong>(51.84) followed. Russia&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Aleksandr Sadovnikov\u00a0<\/strong>(51.91) is 13th.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Santo Condorelli\u00a0<\/strong>took nearly a half second from his seed time, swimming in heat two. In his second race of the morning, the Canadian touched in 51.99, .01 from his Canadian record.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Evgeny Koptelov\u00a0<\/strong>(52.01) of Russia and\u00a0<strong>Zheng Wen Quan\u00a0<\/strong>(52.08) of Singapore also got second swims.<\/p>\n<h3>Women&#8217;s 200 Backstroke<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Katinka Hosszu\u00a0<\/strong>finished in 2:06.09 to top the heats of the women&#8217;s 200 backstroke this morning. The Iron Lady continued to crush this week with a new personal best time. She sets herself up well to earn four golds in one Games. Canada&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Hilary Caldwell\u00a0<\/strong>finished in 2:07.40 for the second seed in tonight&#8217;s semifinals.\u00a0<strong>Maya DiRado\u00a0<\/strong>of the USA qualified third with a 2:08.60.<\/p>\n<p>Germany&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Lisa Graf\u00a0<\/strong>won the second heat in 2:08.67 with a strong second 100 meters.\u00a0<strong>Belinda Hocking\u00a0<\/strong>of Australia also tied for the fourth seed with that same time.\u00a0China&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Yaxin Liu\u00a0<\/strong>followed in 2:08.84.\u00a0<strong>Dominique Bouchard\u00a0<\/strong>of Canada was just behind in\u00a02:08.87. Ukraine&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Daryna Zevina\u00a0<\/strong>was only .01 behind Bouchard in 2:08.88.<\/p>\n<p>In her fifth Olympic games\u00a0<strong>Kirsty Coventry\u00a0<\/strong>of Zimbabwe earned a semifinal swim in 2:08.91. Australia&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Emily Seebohm\u00a0<\/strong>went a 2:09.00.\u00a0American\u00a0<strong>Missy Franklin\u00a0<\/strong>will also get an semifinal swim with a 2:09.36. Iceland&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Eyglo Gustafsdottir\u00a0<\/strong>is 12th in 2:09.96.<\/p>\n<p>Russian teammates\u00a0<strong>Daria Ustinova\u00a0<\/strong>(2:09.96) and\u00a0<strong>Anastasiia Fesikova\u00a0<\/strong>(2:10.39), and Croatia&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Matea Samardzic\u00a0<\/strong>(2:10.51) and\u00a0<strong>Jenny Mensing\u00a0<\/strong>(2:10.68) of Germany complete tonight&#8217;s semifinals.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Everything you need to follow along live with day six prelims of the 2016 Rio Olympic Games.
