The first gold medal of the night went to a swimmer from lane eight. Kazakhstan\u2019s\u00a0Dmitriy Balandin<\/strong> took home his nation’s first ever swimming medal when he topped the podium in the 200 breaststroke.<\/p>\n

Cate Campbell\u00a0<\/strong>of Australia started the night dropping her prelims 100 freestyle Olympic record again. Young Canadian\u00a0Penny Oleksiak\u00a0<\/strong>finished only .01 behind, lowering her own World Junior record.<\/p>\n

Evgeny Rylov\u00a0<\/strong>of Russia and Australia’s\u00a0Mitch Larkin\u00a0<\/strong>swam the fastest two times in semifinals of the men’s 200 backstroke.<\/p>\n

On a half stroke into the finish, Mireia Belmonte\u00a0<\/strong>of Spain beat\u00a0Madeline Groves\u00a0<\/strong>of Australia by only .03. That was Belmonte’s first Olympic gold.<\/p>\n

After flipping seventh at the halfway mark, Australia’s\u00a0Kyle Chalmers\u00a0<\/strong>stormed home in the men’s 100 freestyle final. The 18 year old was one of three teenagers in the field and took gold. Defending gold medalist\u00a0Nathan Adrian\u00a0<\/strong>wound up third. Silver went to Belgium’s\u00a0Pieter Timmers.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Taylor McKeown\u00a0<\/strong>powered through the 200 breaststroke semifinals. The Americans missed their chance at a third swim in the event.\u00a0Rie Kaneto\u00a0<\/strong>of Japan was second tonight.<\/p>\n

Michael Phelps\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0Ryan Lochte\u00a0<\/strong>went head to head in the second semifinal and will hold the two top seeds tomorrow night in finals of the 200 IM. That event will be Lochte’s final of this Games.<\/p>\n

The American women were strong through the first three legs of the 800 freestyle relay, racing China and Australia at varying points in the race by\u00a0Katie Ledecky\u00a0<\/strong>was too much for anybody else on the end, anchoring her team to gold. Australia took second and the Canadians were third.<\/p>\n
