Men’s 100 Free FINAL:<\/h3>\n

As is the case with the sprint freestyle events it was a tight race across the board.\u00a0Caeleb Dressel<\/strong> of the USA and\u00a0Cameron McEvoy\u00a0<\/strong>of Australia were the quickest off the blocks with reaction times of .62 but it didn’t take long for Canada’s\u00a0Santo Condorelli<\/strong> to move to the front of the competition with a leading split of 22.22.<\/p>\n

The USA’s\u00a0Nathan Adrian<\/strong> flipped close behind Condorelli, splitting a 22.67 at the wall to lead the battle down the home stretch but it was young Australian sprintstar\u00a0Kyle Chalmers<\/strong> who snuck to the front of the crowd for the gold. Chalmers turned in a top time of 47.58 to take home the gold medal and lower his own World Junior Record, previously set at a 47.88.<\/p>\n

Swimming out of lane seven, Belgium’s\u00a0Pieter Timmers<\/strong> snuck his hand to the wall to grab the silver medal with a time of 47.80, just ahead of Adrian’s 47.85 finish. Adrian, the defending gold medalist in the 100 free, was the only finalist from the event four years ago to return to the field in Rio.<\/p>\n

Condorelli settled for fourth and a 47.88, while Great Britain’s\u00a0Duncan Scott\u00a0<\/strong>turned in a final time of 48.01 for fifth.<\/p>\n

Dressel stopped the clock at a 48.02 for sixth and McEvoy posted a 48.12 for seventh. McEvoy still ranks first in the world this year, having clocked a 47.04 at Australia’s Olympic Trials in April, but he was nowhere close to that form this time around.<\/p>\n

Home crowd favorite\u00a0Marcelo Chierighini<\/strong> was eighth with a 48.41.<\/p>\n
