Olympic gold medalist\u00a0<strong>Katie Ledecky<\/strong> will anchor that squad, and she will be joined by\u00a0<strong>Allison Schmitt<\/strong>, the 2012 gold medalist in the 200 free, on the leadoff leg, and\u00a0400 free bronze medalist\u00a0<strong>Leah Smith<\/strong> going second.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Maya DiRado<\/strong> will swim the third leg tonight. DiRado did not even compete in the 200 free at U.S. Olympic Trials, but she has been swimming well so far in Rio, winning a silver in the 400 IM and bronze in the 200 IM.<\/p>\n<p>The second-seeded Australians could challenge through 600 meters, as they will have\u00a0<strong>Emma McKeon\u00a0<\/strong>swimming the third leg behind\u00a0<strong>Leah Neale<\/strong> and\u00a0<strong>Bronte Barratt<\/strong>, but it&#8217;s tough to imagine\u00a0<strong>Tasmin Cook\u00a0<\/strong>keeping pace with Ledecky on the anchor leg.<\/p>\n<p>Australia previously won this race at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, but the Americans have won gold every other time it&#8217;s been contested at the Olympics (it was first raced at the 1996 Games in Atlanta).<\/p>\n<p>Talented Chinese freestyler\u00a0<strong>Shen Duo<\/strong> leads things off for her country after she scratched out of the 100 free semis, and <strong>Veronika Popova<\/strong> goes first for Russia.
