That was still seven tenths shy of the 52.06 she posted last month.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Simone Manuel\u00a0<\/strong>of the United States led the first circle seeded heat at the 50 meter mark and was incredibly smooth coming home. Manuel will return to semifinals in second with a 53.32, only three tenths off the American record.<\/p>\n<p>With Olympic gold and silver in tow, Sweden&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Sarah Sjostrom\u00a0<\/strong>swam a 53.57 this morning for the third spot. The Netherlands&#8217;\u00a0<strong>Ranomi Kromowidjojo\u00a0<\/strong>held the old Olympic record at 53.00. This morning she finished fourth in 53.43.<\/p>\n<p>Canada&#8217;s young\u00a0<strong>Penny Oleksiak\u00a0<\/strong>tied Denmark&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Jeanette\u00a0<\/strong><strong>Ottesen\u00a0<\/strong>for the fifth seed as the two both posted 53.53s.\u00a0<strong>Abbey Weitzeil\u00a0<\/strong>of the USA was .01 behind the duo in 53.54.<\/p>\n<p>Reigning world champion\u00a0<strong>Bronte Campbell\u00a0<\/strong>of Australia will return eighth in 53.71.\u00a0Canada&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Chantal Van Landeghem\u00a0<\/strong>swam a 53.89 and\u00a0<strong>Charlotte Bonnet\u00a0<\/strong>of France followed in 53.93.<\/p>\n<p>Denmark&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Pernille Blume\u00a0<\/strong>and China&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Menghui Zhu\u00a0<\/strong>tied for 11th with 54.15s.\u00a0Belarus&#8217;\u00a0<strong>Aliaksandra Herasimenia\u00a0<\/strong>touched in 54.25 and\u00a0<strong>Etiene Medeiros\u00a0<\/strong>of Brazil posted a 54.38 this morning. China&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Duo Shen\u00a0<\/strong>took the 15th spot with a 54.41.<\/p>\n<p>Japanes teammates\u00a0<strong>Rikako Ikee\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0<strong>Miki Uchida\u00a0<\/strong>posted the third tie of the morning and will have to swim-off for the 16th spot in tonight&#8217;s semifinals.<\/p>\n<p>Italy&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Federica Pellegrini\u00a0<\/strong>had the sixth fastest time in the world this year but\u00a0did not swim what should have been her final\u00a0individual event of the week.<\/p>\n<h3>Men&#8217;s 200 Backstroke<\/h3>\n<p>Russia&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Evgeny Rylov\u00a0<\/strong>stopped the clock in 1:55.02 to take the top spot for semifinals of the men&#8217;s 200 backstroke tonight. Almost a half second behind him was\u00a0China&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Jiayu Xu\u00a0<\/strong>in 1:55.51.<\/p>\n<p>Australian\u00a0<strong>Mitch Larkin\u00a0<\/strong>entered with the fastest time in the world this year. He&#8217;ll head to semifinals in third with a 1:56.01.<\/p>\n<p>The gold medalist\u00a0in the 100 backstroke\u00a0<strong>Ryan Murphy\u00a0<\/strong>posted a 1:56.29. His college and American teammate\u00a0<strong>Jacob Pebley\u00a0<\/strong>was just behind with a 1:56.44. The Cal duo will be fourth and fifth this evening.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Jan-Philip Glania\u00a0<\/strong>of Germany and Russia&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Andrei Shabasov <\/strong>both touched in\u00a01:56.50 this morning to tie for sixth.\u00a0Japan&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Ryosuke Irie\u00a0<\/strong>is eighth in 1:56.61.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Chiristian Diener<\/strong>\u00a0of Germany<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>(1:56.62),\u00a0<strong>Joshua Beaver\u00a0<\/strong>of Australia (1:56.65), and\u00a0<strong>Guangyuan Li\u00a0<\/strong>of China (1:56.85) take the ninth through 11th seeds.<\/p>\n<p>Brazil&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Leondardo De Deus\u00a0<\/strong>(1:57.00), Japan&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Masaki Kaneko\u00a0<\/strong>(1:57.19), Spain&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Hugo Gonzalez de Oliviera\u00a0<\/strong>(1:57.50), New Zealand&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Corey Main\u00a0<\/strong>(1:57.51), and Israel&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Yakov Toumarkin\u00a0<\/strong>(1:57.58) will also race again tonight.<\/p>\n<h3>Women&#8217;s 200 Breaststroke<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Denmark&#8217;s <\/span><b>Rikke Moller Pedersen <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">posted a 2:22.72 for the top spot in tonight\u2019s women\u2019s 200 breaststroke semifinals. <\/span><b>Rie Kaneto <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of Japan entered with the top time in the world this year. She posted a 2:22.86 in prelims to snag the second seed. Australian <\/span><b>Taylor Mckeown <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">led her heat with a 2:23.00 and the third best time of prelims.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Chloe Tutton <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">swam a 2:23.34 this morning for the fourth seed. Her British teammate <\/span><b>Molly Renshaw<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> had a very solid prelims swim, finishing .03 behind in 2:23.37.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Kierra Smith <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of Canada touched sixth this morning in 2:23.69 ahead of Turkey\u2019s <\/span><b>Viktoria Zeynep Gunes <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">with a 2:23.83.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Yulia Efimova <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">was a body length behind the field at the 100 meter mark. The 100 silver medalist came back in the second half to earn the eighth seed with her 2:23.90.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Jinglin Shi <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of China posted a 2:24.33 while \u00a0Iceland&#8217;s <\/span><b>Hrafnhildur Luthersdottir <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">touched in 2:24.43. Spain&#8217;s <\/span><b>Jessica Vall Montero <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">touched in 2:24.55. <\/span><b>Molly Hannis <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of the United States earned the twelfth seed with her 2:24.74.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Kanako Watanabe <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of Japan went a 2:24.77 for 13th. There was a solid drop off before <\/span><b>Jenna Laukkanen <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">representing Finland finished in 2:25.52.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After earning Olympic gold in the 100 breaststroke, <\/span><b>Lilly King <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">shot out in front of her heat at the first 50. A stronger swimmer in the 100, King settled for 15th overall in 2:25.89. Russia\u2019s <\/span><b>Sofia Andreeva <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">was the last swimmer in with a 2:26.58.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Men&#8217;s 200 IM<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Ryan Lochte\u00a0<\/strong>of the USA shut it down at the end, but still secured the top seed with his 1:57.38.\u00a0<strong>Philip Heintz\u00a0<\/strong>of Germany posted a 1:57.59 for the second seed.\u00a0<strong>Michael Phelps\u00a0<\/strong>keeps alive his chance of four straight Olympic golds in a single\u00a0event, winning the final heat in 1:58.41, despite cruising into the finish. He&#8217;ll be the third seed.<\/p>\n<p>Brazil&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Henrique Rodrigues\u00a0<\/strong>stopped the clock in 1:58.56. His teammate\u00a0<strong>Thiago Pereira\u00a0<\/strong>raced alongside Phelps and will be fifth with a 1:58.63.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Kosuke Hagino\u00a0<\/strong>of Japan\u00a0won the 400 IM on the opening night. He swam a controlled 1:58.79 in this morning&#8217;s 200 for the sixth spot. His teammate\u00a0<strong>Hiromasa Fujimori\u00a0<\/strong>was just behind in 1:58.88.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Shun Wang\u00a0<\/strong>of China\u00a0went a 1:58.98.\u00a0<strong>Andreas Vazaios\u00a0<\/strong>of Greece (1:59.33),\u00a0<strong>Simon Sjodin\u00a0<\/strong>of Sweden (1:59.41), and\u00a0<strong>Dan Wallace\u00a0<\/strong>of Great Britain (1:59.44) were ninth through 11th this morning.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Portugal\u2019s <\/span><b>Alexis Santos <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Switzerland\u2019s <\/span><b>Jeremny Desplanches,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and Spain\u2019s <\/span><b>Eduardo Solache Gomez <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">had an impressive three way tie for 12th as they all posted 1:59.67.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Ieuan Lloyd <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of Great Britain (1:59.74) and <\/span><b>Bradlee Ashby <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of New Zealand (1:59.77) complete tonight\u2019s semifinals.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Women\u2019s 4\u00d7200 Freestyle Relay<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Allison Schmitt\u00a0<\/strong>led the United States out to an early lead in this morning&#8217;s 800 freestyle relay with a 1:55.95. She was followed by\u00a0<strong>Missy Franklin\u00a0<\/strong>(1:57.03).\u00a0<strong>Melanie Margalis\u00a0<\/strong>(1:57.04)\u00a0had a back and forth race with<strong> China&#8217;s Jie Dong\u00a0<\/strong>(1:57.45). In the anchor leg\u00a0<strong>Cierra Runge\u00a0<\/strong>swam a 1:57.75. The Americans will return to finals in \u00a0first with a 7:47.77.<\/p>\n<p>Australia&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Leah Neale\u00a0<\/strong>(1:57.06),\u00a0<strong>Bronte Barratt\u00a0<\/strong>(1:56.85),\u00a0<strong>Tasmin Cook\u00a0<\/strong>(1:57.35), and\u00a0<strong>Jessica Ashwood\u00a0<\/strong>(1:57.98) combined for a 7:49.24 to win heat one and take the second seed overall.<\/p>\n<p>The Chinese team of\u00a0<strong>Yanhan Al\u00a0<\/strong>(1:57.20),\u00a0<strong>Yuhan Zhang\u00a0<\/strong>(1:56.38),\u00a0Dong<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>(1:57.45), and\u00a0<strong>Shijia Wang\u00a0<\/strong>(1:58.55) will be third in 7:49.58.<\/p>\n<p>On the Australians&#8217; tail was the Russian squad of\u00a0<strong>Viktoriia Andreeva\u00a0<\/strong>(1:57.82),\u00a0<strong>Arina Openysheva\u00a0<\/strong>(1:57.67),\u00a0<strong>Daria Mullakaeva\u00a0<\/strong>(1:57.85), and\u00a0<strong>Veronika Popova\u00a0<\/strong>(1:57.18) in 7:50.52.
