PHOENIX, Arizona, July 17. THE start of the FINA world championships highlights today's news segment of The Morning Swim Show<\/i>.<\/p>\n

China is off to a grand start at the FINA world championships with a sweep of the men's 1-meter springboard. Qin Kai, the bronze medalist in the 3-meter springboard in Beijing, won the first gold of the world championships earlier today with 449 points. Zhang Xinhua was in third position for most of the final but used a strong last dive to jump ahead of Australia's Matthew Mitcham for silver with 445 points. Mitcham, the surprise winner of the platform diving at the Olympics, won bronze with 440 points.<\/p>\n

Bad start for the Americans. Chris Colwill had two promising rounds but fell out of contention with poor dives in the third and fourth rounds, scoring twos and threes. He finished ninth.
\nTerry Horner, the other American in the competition, failed to qualify for the final with his 16th place finish in the preliminaries.<\/p>\n

Also taking place today was the women's 10-meter preliminaries. Olympic gold medalist Chen Ruolin leads the pack with 388 points. Australia's Melissa Wu is second and China's Kang Li is third. American Haley Ishimatsu qualified in 10th place. The semifinals of that event takes place at 4 a.m. Eastern time, with the final at 9:30 a.m.<\/p>\n

The men's three-meter synchro prelims and semis are tomorrow as well at 6:30 a.m. and 11:15 a.m. All the semifinal and final action can be seen live on universalsports.com.<\/p>\n
