AUSTIN, Jan. 30. THE 10th-ranked University of Texas women's swimming and diving team will look to rebound after last weekend's loss to No. 3 Arizona when they host No. 4 Stanford and No. 11 SMU in their final dual meet of the season on Friday-Saturday, Feb. 2-3. The first race is slated for 6 p.m., on Friday and noon on Saturday.<\/p>\n
SCOUTING THE CARDINAL
\nNo. 4 Stanford won 11 of 16 events to defeat No. 8 USC, 167-131, on Saturday, Jan. 27 in Palo Alto, Calif. Olympian and senior Misty Hyman led Stanford to two first-place finishes in the 100 (54.74) and 200 backstroke (1:58.01), while freshman Tara Kirk set a pool record in the 100 breaststroke (1:01.30). The Cardinal have now posted a dual-meet record of 3-1,
\nwith their only loss of the season coming against No. 3 Arizona, 159-138, on Jan. 20.<\/p>\n
THE ALL-TIME SERIES VS STANFORD
\nUnder co-head coach Jill Sterkel, the Longhorns hold a 0-8 mark against Stanford. Most recently, Stanford and Texas placed second and third, respectively, at the
\nTexas Invitational earlier this season (Dec. 1-3). Last year, Stanford recorded its 12th consecutive win against UT, defeating the Longhorns, 173-127, on Oct. 15, 1999, in Palo Alto, Calif. The last time Texas defeated Stanford was on Feb. 6, 1988 by a score of 80-50 in Palo Alto, Calif.<\/p>\n
SCOUTING THE MUSTANGS
\nThe 11th-ranked SMU Mustangs downed Houston, 141-96, on Saturday, Jan. 27 in Dallas, Texas. The Mustangs have now won their last four dual meets and own a 5-2 overall record. Sophomore Sarah Chandler leads the Mustangs' breaststroke contingent, notching team best-times in the 100 (1:02.79) and 200 (2:13.12) events.<\/p>\n

\nThe Longhorns are 4-4 against SMU under co-head coach Jill Sterkel, after the Mustangs claiming a 170-130
\nvictory over Texas last season on Feb. 5 in Dallas, Texas.<\/p>\n
LAST MEET REWIND
\nLast weekend, Texas fell to No. 3 Arizona, 195.5-176.5, on Friday- Saturday, Jan. 26-27. The Longhorns held a slight lead heading into Saturday's final session, but the Wildcats claimed four of six events on the day en route to victory. Senior Colleen Lann\u00e9 (Tucson, Ariz.\/Salpointe Catholic) led the UT charge by winning the 100 freestyle (49.14) and placing second in the 200 freestyle (1:47.27). Sophomore Tanica Jamison (Dublin, Calif.\/Dublin) claimed first-place honors in the 100 butterfly (55.62), while also
\nfinishing third in the 100 backstroke (56.99) and freshman Ally Hartzell (Austin, Texas\/Home-schooled) captured the one-meter springboard by posting a season-best score of 277.75.<\/p>\n
IN THE NATIONAL RANKINGS
\nTexas dropped to No. 10 in the latest edition of the College Swimming Coaches Association of America Top 25
\nPoll (CSCAA), after falling to Florida on Jan. 13. The next edition of the CSCAA Poll will be released on Feb. 1 and posted on swiminfo.com.<\/p>\n
HAPPENIN' HARTZELL
\nFreshman divers Ally Hartzell recorded impressive
\nperformances this past weekend, placing in the top five of each diving event. She not only won the one-meter springboard (277.75), but also placed third on the three-meter event (472.70) and finished the weekend with a fourth-place showing on the platform (357.10).<\/p>\n
GOING THE DISTANCE AGAIN
\nFor the second week in a row, sophomore Emily Ballenger (Anderson, S.C.\/T.L. Hanna) has led the Longhorns in the distance events. On Saturday, she posted a second-place finish in both the 500 freestyle (4:52.41) and 1650 freestyle, where she also recorded a team season-best time of 16:47.68 to pace the Horns'
\ndistance contingent.<\/p>\n
HOME SWEET HOME
\nAfter spending the first part of the dual meet season on the road, Texas will remain at home until the NCAA
\nChampionships held on March 15-17 in Long Island, N.Y.
