The 18-year-old Chalmers led the way in\u00a047.90, followed closely by the 20-year-old Dressel in 47.91, and the two will return to semifinals in first and second.<\/p>\n<p>It was the first time that either swimmer has swum under 48 seconds in their young careers. Chalmers&#8217; time lowered his own Junior World Record of 48.03 set in April. Dressel&#8217;s previous best was a 48.10 set Sunday night leading off the gold-medal winning 400 free relay for the U.S.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I had a little bit of strategy change from the relay,&#8221; Dressel said. &#8220;I wanted to smooth it out a little bit the first 50, and I did.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Swimming in the last of the non-circle seeded heats, Great Britain&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Duncan Scott\u00a0<\/strong>turned in a 48.01 to set a new Scottish record and claim the third spot.<\/p>\n<p>Australia&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Cameron McEvoy\u00a0<\/strong>entered with a seed time already faster than the Olympic record. This morning he posted a 48.12 for the fourth spot.\u00a0Canada&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Santo Condorelli\u00a0<\/strong>posted a 48.22 for fifth.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Joseph Schooling\u00a0<\/strong>of Singapore dropped\u00a0the 200 butterfly to focus on the 100 freestyle. This morning he posted a 48.27 in his opening swim. That time will make him the sixth seed. Schooling figures to have a shot at the final in the 100 free, but he will be a serious medal contender coming up in the 100 fly, beginning Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>Seventh will be\u00a0<strong>Damian Wierling\u00a0<\/strong>of Germany (48.35), and\u00a0Russia&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Vladimir Morozov\u00a0<\/strong>stopped the clock in 48.39 for eighth. He was followed by Belgium&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Pieter Timmers\u00a0<\/strong>(48.46) and Italy&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Luca Dotto\u00a0<\/strong>(48.47).\u00a0Canada&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Yuri Kisil\u00a0<\/strong>posted a 48.49.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Sebastiaan Verschuren\u00a0<\/strong>of the Netherlands (48.51), Brazil&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Marcelo Chierighini\u00a0<\/strong>(48.53) also return to semifinals. China&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Zetao Ning\u00a0<\/strong>and France&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Clement Mignon\u00a0<\/strong>tie for 14th in 48.57.<\/p>\n<p>Defending Olympic gold medalist\u00a0<strong>Nathan Adrian\u00a0<\/strong>only made the semifinals by .03 after finishing 16th this morning with a 48.58. Although he did not stop to talk to the print media, he seemed upbeat in his television interview and in photos captured on deck.
