Ultimately, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/katie-ledecky-smashes-400-free-world-record-earns-first-gold-medal-for-usa\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">it was <\/span><b>Katie Ledecky\u2019s <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">400 freestyle that deserved the recognition<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, with the nineteen year old lowering her own world record by nearly two full seconds to continue to establish her absolute dominance in the event.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Setting an Olympic record in prelims in typical <\/span><b>Ledecky <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fashion, the teenager came into the Olympic final <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/katie-ledecky-posts-olympic-record-in-400-freestyle-prelims\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">as the top seed with a 3:58.71 that was just off her world record<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and already ahead of her <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/katie-ledecky-rattles-world-record-in-400-freestyle\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">world leading time from the U.S. Olympic Trials<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Leading the race from start to finish, <\/span><b>Ledecky <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">was under world record pace the entire time, splitting 57.01, 1:00.06, 1:00.51, and 58.84 by 100\u2019s to best the field by nearly five full seconds. Closest to her was Great Britain\u2019s <\/span><b>Jazz Carlin<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, who grabbed silver (4:01.23) over the USA\u2019s <\/span><b>Leah Smith <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(4:01.92)<\/span><b>. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That also made <\/span><b>Ledecky <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the first American woman to win the event since the 2000 Sydney Olympics when <\/span><b>Brooke Bennett <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">took home the gold. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This the biggest chunk that <\/span><b>Ledecky <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">has taken off of the world record, and what truly makes this swim legendary is how it has cemented her dominance in the event. The American now owns 9 of the top 10 fastest times in history, with the lone remaining time being <\/span><b>Federica Pelligrini\u2019s <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3:59.15 from the 2009 World Championships that was swum in a now banned bodysuit. That is unprecedented, especially considering no other female swimmer has been under 4:00 in a textile suit. With this win, <\/span><b>Ledecky <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">also continues her amazing streak of remaining undefeated in individual events in international competition.
