﻿{"id":216770,"date":"2016-08-10T09:00:49","date_gmt":"2016-08-10T16:00:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=216770"},"modified":"2016-08-10T14:02:55","modified_gmt":"2016-08-10T21:02:55","slug":"3-takeaways-for-swimmers-watching-the-2016-rio-olympic-games","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/3-takeaways-for-swimmers-watching-the-2016-rio-olympic-games\/","title":{"rendered":"3 Takeaways for Swimmers Watching the 2016 Rio Olympic Games"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>By Ashleigh Shanley, Swimming World College Intern<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Every four years, swimmers get the pleasure of seeing our sport in the spotlight. \u00a0During those few weeks in August, it seems as though our sport\u00a0finally gets the recognition the athletes\u00a0deserve for the American and world records that are broken each year, and then broken once again at the Olympics.<\/p>\n<p>However, swimmers can gain a lot more out of the Olympics than the satisfaction of seeing our fellow athletes and teammates hard work pay off. \u00a0When the best swimmers in the world come together to compete, we can learn an immense amount about our sport even while sitting on\u00a0our family room couches!<\/p>\n<p>Between prelims, semifinals and finals each\u00a0event is broadcasted at least two times. \u00a0This means that for every stroke and every event, we have the opportunity to study and learn from the best swimmers not only in the United States, but the world.<\/p>\n<p>So although you may not be competing in the Olympics and may be done with summer competition, whether you are a visual or auditory learner there are many\u00a0ways you can improve and enhance your swimming by watching each session in Rio.<\/p>\n<h2>1. for the fall season, whether it be club, high school or college swimming. \u00a0And with a short break, it is the perfect time to set fresh, new\u00a0goals.<\/p>\n<p>There is nothing more motivating than seeing\u00a0<strong>Katie Ledecky\u00a0<\/strong>break her own world record or\u00a0<strong>Michael Phelps\u00a0<\/strong>earn his <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nbcolympics.com\/video\/deck-us-swimmers-they-win-4x100m-free-relay\" target=\"_blank\">nineteenth gold medal<\/a>. \u00a0Throughout the next week there will only be more amazing accomplishments by swimmers around the world that will give you chills.<\/p>\n<p>But what you can do from your family room couch is remember the\u00a0excitement and pride you feel for your country when an athlete wins a medal or breaks a record, and channel that feeling into your goals for next season.<\/p>\n<p>Use that feeling as a way to keep you motivated. \u00a0Strive for that feeling every dual meet or even every practice, so that when it comes to your winter championship meet or even your spring championship meet, you are hungry to feel the same way you did when you saw Ledecky or Phelps celebrating their wins.<\/p>\n<p>Most people watch the Olympics, particularly the swimming, to see Phelps and the familiar faces break world records and win medals, but we swimmers can\u00a0get so much more out of watching each session.<\/p>\n<p>With one more week of swimming, be sure to pick up on a few technique changes you can implement into next season and use Team USA or another
