{"id":216760,"date":"2016-08-08T14:58:52","date_gmt":"2016-08-08T21:58:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=216760"},"modified":"2016-08-08T16:39:28","modified_gmt":"2016-08-08T23:39:28","slug":"2016-junior-nationals-day-1-finals-live-recap","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/2016-junior-nationals-day-1-finals-live-recap\/","title":{"rendered":"2016 Junior Nationals: Day 1 Finals Live Recap"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>By Caitlin Daday, Swimming World College Intern<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Everything you need to follow along with the first night of finals of the 2016 Speedo Junior National Championships.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Schedule of Events:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Women&#8217;s 200 Butterfly<\/li>\n<li>Men&#8217;s 200 Butterfly<\/li>\n<li>Women&#8217;s 100 Breaststroke<\/li>\n<li>Men&#8217;s 100 Breaststroke<\/li>\n<li>Women&#8217;s 800 Freestyle<\/li>\n<li>Men&#8217;s 1500 Freestyle<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Hit refresh for all the latest coverage.<\/p>\n<h2>Women&#8217;s 200 Butterfly:<\/h2>\n<p>In the first final of the week, Austin Swim Club&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Dakota Luther<\/strong> claimed the Junior National title in a winning time of 2:10.63. Luther finished in dominating fashion, nearly two seconds ahead of her next closest competitor,\u00a0<strong>Ashlyn Fiorilli<\/strong> of Texas Ford, who touched second in 2:12.46. Coming in just behind Fiorilli were Tide&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Callie Dickinson<\/strong> and Highlander&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Carley Lowe<\/strong>, who claimed third and fourth places in times of 2:12.64 and 2:12.79 respectively.<\/p>\n<p>Fifth place went to\u00a0<strong>Regan Smith\u00a0<\/strong>of Riptide in 2:13.32.\u00a0Crimson Tide&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Jewels Harris<\/strong> was just behind Smith in sixth place with a time of 2:13.44.<\/p>\n<p>Brea&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Kenisha Liu\u00a0<\/strong>(2:15.51) and Fort Collins&#8217;\u00a0<strong>Coleen Gillilan<\/strong> (2:16.40) rounded out the top eight.<\/p>\n<h2>Men&#8217;s 200 Butterfly:<\/h2>\n<p>North Carolina&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Will Macmillan<\/strong> became the only swimmer to break the 2:00 barrier in the men&#8217;s event, taking the win in 1:59.76. Behind him\u00a0<strong>Fynn Minuth\u00a0<\/strong>touched second with a time of 2:00.43. Sandpiper&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Carter Grimes<\/strong> finished third in 2:00.88, dropping a second and a half from his prelims swim.<\/p>\n<p>North Texas Nadadores&#8217;\u00a0<strong>Jack LeVant<\/strong> took fourth place in 2:01.30, just ahead of\u00a0<strong>Spencer Carl<\/strong> of Michigan Lakeshore who was fifth in 2:01.33.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Andrew Koustik<\/strong>, represnting Irvine Novaquatics, finished sixth in 2:02.00. Maverick&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Alex Dillmann<\/strong> was seventh in 2:02.60, while Memphis Thunder&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Jack McCaghren<\/strong> touched eighth in 2:03.45.<\/p>\n<h2>Women&#8217;s 100 Breaststroke:<\/h2>\n<p>15 year old\u00a0<strong>Zoe Bartel\u00a0<\/strong>of Fort Collins won the women&#8217;s 100 breaststroke in dominant fashion. With an entire second drop from prelims, her 1:08.11 was good to win by almost a second and a half.\u00a0<strong>Olivia Calegan<\/strong> of Greater Nebraska was Bartel&#8217;s next closest competitor, touching second in 1:09.56. Third place went to Champaign County YMCA&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Ema Rajic<\/strong> in 1:10.19.<\/p>\n<p>Rajic was followed by North Bay&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Halle Morris<\/strong> for fourth in 1:10.29.\u00a0<strong>Hanna Gresser<\/strong> of Firestone Akron took fifth in 1:10.42.<\/p>\n<p>For sixth place,\u00a0<strong>Rachel Ramey\u00a0<\/strong>of Texas Ford swam a 1:11.39.\u00a0<strong>Alicia Harrison<\/strong> of Buenaventura and Firestone Akron&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Carly Hart<\/strong> completed the top eight in 1:11.84 and 1:11.86, respectively.<\/p>\n<h2>Men&#8217;s 100 Breaststroke:<\/h2>\n<p>The top two men in the 100 breaststroke were both under meet record time.\u00a0<strong>Michael Andrew\u00a0<\/strong>claimed the win in 1:00.08, just off his National Age Group record. Second place finisher\u00a0<strong>Devon Nowicki<\/strong> of Aqua Swim Club also came in under the old mark of 1:01.94, but still a second behind Andrew at 1:01.06.<\/p>\n<p>Third place went to Spokane&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Daniel Roy<\/strong> in 1:02.22.\u00a0<strong>AJ Bornstein<\/strong> of Ridgefield was fourth in 1:03.47, while Mason Manta Rays&#8217;\u00a0<strong>Jake Foster<\/strong> touched fifth in 1:03.78.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dillon Hillis<\/strong> of Manhattan Makos took sixth 1:04.12, ahead of New Trier&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Charles Scheinfeld<\/strong> at 1:04.25.\u00a0<strong>Mitch Hovis<\/strong> of King Aquatics was eighth in 1:04.48.<\/p>\n<h2>Women&#8217;s 800 Freestyle:<\/h2>\n<p>With a solid six second drop, La Mirada Armada&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Taylor Ault<\/strong> took the win in the women&#8217;s distance event with a time of 8:37.97. It was a tight race all the way between Ault and Magnolia&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Joy Field<\/strong>, with Ault pulling away only in the final 100 meters. Field finished with a time of 8:38.94. 15 year old\u00a0<strong>Erica Sullivan<\/strong> of Sandpipers took third place in 8:41.52.<\/p>\n<p>Fourth and fifth place were taken by two 14 year olds, the Fish&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Madelyn Donohoe<\/strong> and North Baltimore&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Chase Travis<\/strong>. Donohoe finished in a time of 8:42.10. Travis easily had one of the most impressive swims of the day, swimming in the afternoon heats and dropping eleven seconds down to 8:43.47 for fifth.<\/p>\n<p>Greater Tampa&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Morgan Tankersly<\/strong> also moved up from the morning to take sixth in 8:46.53. Seventh place went to Sandpiper&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Hailey Houck<\/strong> in 8:46.55.\u00a0<strong>Haley Yelle\u00a0<\/strong>of Mansfield was eighth in 8:48.41.<\/p>\n<h2>Men&#8217;s 1500 Freestyle:<\/h2>\n<p>16 year old\u00a0<strong>Johannes Calloni<\/strong> of Scarlet Aquatics claimed the longest event of the night in a new meet record of 15:16.62. Calloni crushed the previous meet record of 15:23.01, held by 2016 Olympian\u00a0<strong>Jordan Wilimovsky<\/strong>. Also under the old meet record was second place finisher\u00a0<strong>Aaron Apel\u00a0<\/strong>of Scottsdale, who touched in 15:17.60, as well as Fast Swim Team&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Simon Lamar<\/strong>, who clocked a 15:22.03.<\/p>\n<p>Sarasota Tsunami&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>T.C. Smith<\/strong> took fourth place in 15:36.75. Fifth went to Alamo Area&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Mikey Calvillo<\/strong>, moving up from the afternoon heats with his 15:42.76.\u00a0<strong>Joshua McDonald\u00a0<\/strong>of the Cincinnati Marlins took sixth with his afternoon time of 15:47.74.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Eric Knowles\u00a0<\/strong>of Dayton Raiders (15:48.84) and Sandpiper&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Nicholas McDowell\u00a0<\/strong>(15:49.09) rounded out the top eight finishers.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Caitlin Daday, Swimming World College Intern Everything you need to follow along with the first night of finals of the 2016 Speedo Junior National Championships.
