Sjostrom&#8217;s performance also makes her the first Swede to earn a gold medal in swimming at the Olympic Games.<\/p>\n<p>Earning the silver medal was Canada&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Penny Oleksiak<\/strong>\u00a0with a time of 56.46. Oleksiak&#8217;s time lowers her own junior world record and Canadian record of 56.73, a record that she set in prelims of the 100 fly.<\/p>\n<p>2012 Olympic gold medalist and first woman to swim a sub-56 in this event,\u00a0<strong>Dana Vollmer<\/strong>\u00a0(USA), clocked a final 56.63 for third.<\/p>\n<p>Chinese teammates\u00a0<strong>Chen Xinyi\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0<strong>Lu Ying<\/strong>\u00a0grabbed fourth and fifth respectively, separate by a slim .04 seconds. Chen turned in a 56.72 over Lu&#8217;s 56.76.<\/p>\n<p>Japan&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Rikako Ikee\u00a0<\/strong>picked up sixth place with a final time of 56.86 to be the last swimmer under the 57-second mark.<\/p>\n<p>Australia&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Emma McKeon<\/strong>\u00a0(57.05) and\u00a0Denmark&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Jeanette Ottesen<\/strong>\u00a0(57.17) posted seventh and eighth respectively.<\/p>\n<h3>\u00a0Men&#8217;s 200 Free Semi-Finals:<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">China\u2019s <\/span><b>Sun Yang<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> maintained his spot atop the leaderboard in the men\u2019s 200 free, dropping his time to a 1:44.63 in heat two. Yang is now the only athlete to drop below the 1:45 mark in the 2016 Olympic Games. While his time still sits more than two seconds away from the world record of 1:42.00, he is edging closer to the Olympic Record of 1:42.96. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Newly-minted Olympic gold medalist <\/span><b>Kosuke Hagino<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of Japan picked up the second place seed, stopping the clock at a 1:45.45 from the second heat. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">USA\u2019s <\/span><b>Conor Dwyer<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> earned a close third place seed for tomorrow\u2019s final, clocking a time of 2:45.55. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">World Record holder <\/span><b>Paul Biedermann<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of Germany and Russia\u2019s <\/span><b>Aleksandr Krasnykh <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">return tied as the fourth place seed after posting times of 1:45.69 from separate heats. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Townley Haas<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of the USA \u00a0picked up the sixth place seed with a time of 1:45.92, followed closely by South Africa\u2019s <\/span><b>Chad le Clos<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (1:45.94). <\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>James Guy<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of Great Britain completes tomorrow\u2019s final heat with a 1:46.23. <\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Women&#8217;s 100 Breast Semi-Finals:<\/h3>\n<p><b>Lilly King<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of the USA entered the water for heat two of the semi-finals with confidence, maintaining a strong stroke throughout the entire 100. King was the first at the wall for the 50, before surging ahead in the final 50 meters to stop the clock at a 1:05.70, once again edging out Efimova. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Yulia Efimova <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of Russia<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">powered home in the final 50 of the first heat to capture the opening semifinal in 1:05.72, just faster than her 1:05.79 from this morning. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">China\u2019s <\/span><b>Shi Jinglin<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> picked up the third place seed for tomorrow\u2019s final with a time of 1:06.31. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Ruta Meilutyte <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of Lithuania<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">led the first semifinal at the 50 meter mark and came home in a 1:06.44 to grab the fourth place seed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Continuing her breakout year the USA\u2019s <\/span><b>Katie Meili<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> tied for the fifth place seed with Jamaica\u2019s <\/span><b>Alia Atkinson<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The two posted matching times of 1:06.52 from the second heat. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Israel\u2019s <\/span><b>Hrafnhildur Luthersdottir<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and Canada\u2019s <\/span><b>Rachel Nicol <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">return as seventh and eighth with times of 1:06.71 and 1:06.73 respectively. <\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Men&#8217;s 100 Breast FINAL:<\/h3>\n<p><b>Adam Peaty<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of Great Britain charged off the blocks with the fastest reaction time of the men\u2019s 100 breast final. The young Brit jumped to an immediate lead and never looked back, charging ahead of the competition to stop the clock in world record time. Peaty lowered his existing world and Olympic record of 57.55 down to a 57.13 to earn gold and give him the seven fastest times in this event. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2012 Olympic gold medalist <\/span><b>Cameron van der Burgh<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of South Africa was the first to pop up off the initial start but battled hard for second overall with a 58.69.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Cody Miller<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of the USA claimed the bronze medal in American record style, clocking a final 58.87. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fellow American <\/span><b>Kevin Cordes<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was fourth with a time of 59.22, just ahead of Brazil\u2019s <\/span><b>Joao Gomes\u2019 <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">59.31. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Japan\u2019s <\/span><b>Yasuhiro Koseki <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and Brazil\u2019s <\/span><b>Felipe Franca<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> turned in similar times of 59.37 and 59.38 for sixth and seventh respectively. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Dmitriy Balandin<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of Kazakhstan finished eighth with a 59.95. <\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Women&#8217;s 400 Free FINAL:<\/h3>\n<p><b>Katie Ledecky<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> earned the USA their first Olympic swimming gold medal in true Ledecky fashion. The nineteen-year-old continued her distance dominance by lowering her own world record by close to two full seconds, stopping the clock at a 3:56.46 and becoming the first American to win the women\u2019s 400 free since 2000. Ledecky finished almost five seconds ahead of the competition giving her ample time to recognize her world record and begin cheering as the race for second headed towards the wall. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Great Britain\u2019s <\/span><b>Jazz Carlin<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> edged out <\/span><b>Leah Smith<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of the USA for the silver medal. Carlin turned up the heat on her kick to pull ahead of Smith and clock a 4:01.23. Smith settled for the bronze and a final time of 4:01.92. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hungary\u2019s <\/span><b>Boglarka Kapas<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> picked up fourth with a 4:02.37 from an outside lane, just ahead of Canada\u2019s <\/span><b>Brittany Maclean <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and her 4:04.69. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Australian duo of <\/span><b>Tamsin Cook<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><b>Jessica Ashwood<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> kept a close race for sixth and seventh with times of 4:05.30 and 4:05.68 respectively. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">France\u2019s <\/span><b>Coralie Balmy<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> rounded out the top eight with a 4:06.98. <\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Men&#8217;s 100 Back Semi-Finals:<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The American men entered semi-finals tonight ready to make a statement, earning the first and second place seeds for tomorrow night\u2019s final of the men\u2019s 100 back. <\/span><b>Ryan Murphy<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> moved to the top of the qualifier\u2019s list with a swift 52.49 from heat one, edging out China\u2019s <\/span><b>Xu Jiayu <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and Russia\u2019s <\/span><b>Evgeny Rylov.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Moving into the second place seed was fellow American <\/span><b>David Plummer<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> posting a time only .01 seconds slower at 52.50. Plummer stopped the clock .20 seconds ahead of Australia\u2019s <\/span><b>Mitch Larkin<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in heat two. Larkin returns as the third place seed with a 52.70. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">France\u2019s <\/span><b>Camille Lacourt<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> slipped from his first place seed down to fourth turning in a final time of 52.72, just ahead of China\u2019s <\/span><b>Xu Jiayu<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and his time of 52.73. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rylov will return as sixth with a 52.84, while Japan\u2019s <\/span><b>Ryosuke Irie <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">picks up seventh with a 53.21. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Robert Glinta<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of Romania rounds out the top eight qualifiers with a 53.34. <\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Women&#8217;s 100 Back Semi-Finals:<\/h3>\n<p><b>Kathleen Baker<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> continues to top the leaderboard in the women\u2019s 100 backstroke, posting a matching time in semi-finals to her prelims swim. Baker battled a strong <\/span><b>Katinka Hosszu<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of Hungary in heat two of the semi-finals to finish once again with a 58.84. Hosszu returns tomorrow night as second with a 58.94. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">China\u2019s <\/span><b>Fu Yuanhui <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">posted the only other sub-59 second swim to return tomorrow as the third place seed. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Australia\u2019s <\/span><b>Madison Wilson<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> cruised to the front of semi-final heat one to return as fourth overall with a 59.03. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Canada\u2019s <\/span><b>Kylie Masse<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> picks up the fifth place seed with a 59.06, just ahead of Denmark\u2019s <\/span><b>Mie Nielsen\u2019s <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">59.18. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Reigning world champion <\/span><b>Emily Seebohm <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of Australia returns as seventh with a 59.32, while <\/span><b>Olivia Smoliga<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of the USA snuck into tomorrow night\u2019s finals with a 59.35.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Men&#8217;s 4&#215;100 Free Relay FINAL:<\/h3>\n<p><b>Caeleb Dressel<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> launched the Americans to a swift start in finals of the men\u2019s 400 free relay holding a tight race with France, Canada, and Australia. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dressel (48.10), <\/span><b>Michael Phelps<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (47.12), <\/span><b>Ryan Held<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (47.73), and <\/span><b>Nathan Adrian<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (46.97) held off the men of France to re-claim gold with a final time of 3:09.92. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">France\u2019s <\/span><b>Mehdy Metella<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (48.08), <\/span><b>Fabien Gilot<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (48.20), <\/span><b>Florent Manaudou <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(47.14), and <\/span><b>Jeremy Stravius <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(47.11) settled for second and a 3:10.53. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Australian team of <\/span><b>James Roberts <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(48.88), <\/span><b>Kyle Chalmers <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(47.38), <\/span><b>James Magnussen <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(48.11), and <\/span><b>Cameron McEvoy <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(47.00) charged ahead of the Russian relay team to claim the bronze with a 3:11.37. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Russian Federation finished a close fourth with a final time of 3:11.64, while the home-crowd favorite, Brazil, picked up fifth with a 3:13.21. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Belgium grabbed sixth with a 3:13.57, followed by Canada (3:14.35) and Japan (3:14.48). <\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Everything you need to follow along live with day two finals of the 2016 Rio Olympic Games.
