The 19 year old touched in 58.84. The American will return to semifinals in the top spot.<\/p>\n<p>World Champion\u00a0<strong>Emily Seebhom\u00a0<\/strong>of Australia was also under 59 with a 58.99 for the second spot.\u00a0<strong>Kylie Masse\u00a0<\/strong>of Canada will have the third seed with a 59.07.\u00a0Denmark&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Mie Nielsen\u00a0<\/strong>had a great second 50 meters and finished in 59.13 for fourth.<\/p>\n<p>Iron Lady\u00a0<strong>Katinka Hosszu\u00a0<\/strong>of Hungary returned to the pool this morning as a newly minted Olympic gold medalist. She posted a 59.13.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Olivia Smoliga\u00a0<\/strong>of the United States was the first swimmer of the morning under a minute. She touched in 59.60 and will return to semifinals in sixth.\u00a0Great Britain&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Georgia Davies\u00a0<\/strong>stopped the clock in 59.86.<\/p>\n<p>Australia&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Maidson Wilson\u00a0<\/strong>was also under the minute mark in the first circle seeded heat in 59.92, to take the eighth seed for semifinals.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Yuanhui Fu\u00a0<\/strong>of China (1:00.02) finished just before\u00a0Russia&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Anastasiia Fesikova\u00a0<\/strong>(1:00.04).<\/p>\n<p>In her fifth Olympics\u00a0<strong>Kirsty Coventry\u00a0<\/strong>of Zimbabwe\u00a0posted a 1:00.13 to secure a semifinal swim.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Matea Samardzic\u00a0<\/strong>of Croatia (1:00.46), China&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Xueer Wang\u00a0<\/strong>(1:00.59), Spain&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Duane Da Rocha Marce\u00a0<\/strong>(1:00.87), and Iceland&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Eyglo Gustafsdottir\u00a0<\/strong>(1:00.89) will also swim again tonight.<\/p>\n<h3>Men&#8217;s 200 Freestyle<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Sun Yang\u00a0<\/strong>of China rose to the top, after touching second in last night&#8217;s 400 freestyle. This morning he clocked a 1:45.75 for the first seed in the 200 freestyle semifinals.<\/p>\n<p>Germany&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Paul Biedermann\u00a0<\/strong>had a great last half and\u00a0touched with the second fastest time of the morning in 1:45.78.\u00a0<strong>Chad Le Clos\u00a0<\/strong>of South Africa swam a gutsy opening 100, under world record pace at the 50 meter mark, and secured third in 1:45.89.<\/p>\n<p>The United States&#8217;\u00a0<strong>Conor Dwyer\u00a0<\/strong>qualified fourth in 1:45.95. His teammate\u00a0<strong>Townley Haas\u00a0<\/strong>swam a<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>1:46.13 for fifth.\u00a0Great Britain&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>James Guy\u00a0<\/strong>tied Haas for that fifth spot.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Kosuke Hagino\u00a0<\/strong>of Japan was back in the water with Olympic gold in hand. He&#8217;ll head to semifinals seventh with a 1:46.19.<\/p>\n<p>The Netherlands&#8217;\u00a0<strong>Sebastiaan Verschuren\u00a0<\/strong>posted a 1:46.32 for eighth\u00a0and Australia&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Thomas Fraser-Holmes<\/strong> swam a 1:46.49 for ninth.<\/p>\n<p>Serbia&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Velimir Stjepanovic\u00a0<\/strong>(1:46.64),\u00a0France&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Jeremy Stravius\u00a0<\/strong>(1:46.67),\u00a0<strong>Dominik Kozma\u00a0<\/strong>of Hungary (1:46.68), and\u00a0South Africa&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Devon Myles William Brown\u00a0<\/strong>also secured semifinal spots.<\/p>\n<p>Venezuela&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Cristian Quintero\u00a0<\/strong>(1:47.02), Poland&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Kacper Majchrzak\u00a0<\/strong>(1:47.12), and Russia&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Aleksandr Krasnykh\u00a0<\/strong>(1:47.15) took the last three spots in semifinals.<\/p>\n<p>The reigning Olympic Champion<strong> Yannick Agnel\u00a0<\/strong>only posted a 1:47.35 after fading at the end.\u00a0He finished 19th and will not move onto the semifinals. 2012 silver medalist\u00a0<strong>Park Tae Hwan\u00a0<\/strong>will not advance either with a 29th place 1:48.06.<\/p>\n<h3>Women&#8217;s 100 Breaststroke<\/h3>\n<p>Russia&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Yulia Efimova\u00a0<\/strong>won heat five of the women&#8217;s 100 breaststroke\u00a0in a 1:05.79. Her finish was greeted by jeers and boos from the crowd. In the very next heat the United States&#8217;\u00a0<strong>Lilly King\u00a0<\/strong>bettered that time by .01 with a 1:05.78 to claim the top seed.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Katie Meili\u00a0<\/strong>won a tight heat four with a 1:06.00 and will return to semifinals in third. Defending champion\u00a0<strong>Ruta Meilutyte\u00a0<\/strong>placed fourth in 1:06.35 while China&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Jinglin Shi\u00a0<\/strong>swam a 1:06.55.<\/p>\n<p>Denmark&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Rikke Moller Pedersen\u00a0<\/strong>posted a 1:06.58 for the sixth spot.\u00a0Jamaica&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Alia Atkinson\u00a0<\/strong>clocked a 1:06.72, just .01 ahead of Australia&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Taylor McKeown\u00a0<\/strong>in 1:06.73.<\/p>\n<p>Iceland&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Hrafnhildur\u00a0<\/strong><strong>Luthersdottir\u00a0<\/strong>(1:06.81) and\u00a0Sweden&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Jennie Johansson <\/strong>(1:06.84)<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>will head to semifinals in ninth and tenth.<\/p>\n<p>Canada&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Rachel Nicol\u00a0<\/strong>(1:06.85),\u00a0<strong>Chloe Tutton\u00a0<\/strong>of Great Britain (1:06.88), and Japan&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Satomi Suzuki\u00a0<\/strong>(1:06.99) also made semifinals.<\/p>\n<p>Spain&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Jessica Vall Montero\u00a0<\/strong>(1:07.07), Turkey&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Viktoria Zeynep Gunes\u00a0<\/strong>(1:07.14), and\u00a0Italy&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Arianna Castiglioni\u00a0<\/strong>(1:07.32) also secured second swims tonight.<\/p>\n<h3>Men&#8217;s 100 Backstroke<\/h3>\n<p>France&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Camille Lacourt\u00a0<\/strong>had the fastest men&#8217;s 100 backstroke this morning in 52.96. The top four swimmers all touched within a tenth of each other.<\/p>\n<p>China&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Jiayu Xu\u00a0<\/strong>posted the second best time of the morning with a 53.01. Just .03 behind him was <strong>Mitch Larkin\u00a0<\/strong>of Australis in 53.04. Another .02 behind the world champion was\u00a0<strong>Ryan Murphy\u00a0<\/strong>in 53.06. His American teammate\u00a0<strong>David Plummer\u00a0<\/strong>posted a 53.19 for the fifth spot.<\/p>\n<p>Russia&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Evgeny Rylov\u00a0<\/strong>touched in 53.25 for sixth. Australia&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Joshua Beaver\u00a0<\/strong>clocked a 53.47 and Japan&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Ryosuke Irie\u00a0<\/strong>will be eighth after swimming a 53.49.<\/p>\n<p>Romania&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Robert Glinta\u00a0<\/strong>registered a ninth\u00a0seeded 53.51.<\/p>\n<p>Great Britain&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Chris Walker-Hebborn\u00a0<\/strong>(53.54), Russia&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Grigory Tarasevich\u00a0<\/strong>(53.65), South Africa&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Christopher Patrick Reid\u00a0<\/strong>(53.68), Brazil&#8217;s <strong>Guilherme Guido\u00a0<\/strong>(53.80),\u00a0Ireland&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Shane Ryan\u00a0<\/strong>(53.85), Germany&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Jan-Philip Glania\u00a0<\/strong>(53.87), and New Zealand&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Corey Main\u00a0<\/strong>(53.99) will also compete in tonight&#8217;s semifinals.<\/p>\n<h3>Women&#8217;s 400 Freestyle<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Katie Ledecky\u00a0<\/strong>got out to a quick start in the final heat and dominated as usual. She&#8217;ll head to finals in the top spot with her 3:58.71, a new Olympic record, and just shy of her own World Record.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Leah Smith\u00a0<\/strong>of the US,\u00a0<strong>Brittany Maclean\u00a0<\/strong>of Canada\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>Jazz Carlin\u00a0<\/strong>of Great Britain had a tight race through the halfway mark of heat three. Maclean lead the way in the third 100. Carlin charged home to take the heat in 4:02.83. She will head to finals seeded second. Smith&#8217;s 4:03.39 will make her the third seed tonight, just .01 ahead of France&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Coralie Balmy\u00a0<\/strong>(4:03.40). Smith touched\u00a0just .04 ahead of Maclean (4:03.43) who will be seeded fifth tonight.<\/p>\n<p>Australian national record holder\u00a0<strong>Jessica Ashwood\u00a0<\/strong>posted a 4:03.58 to return to tonight&#8217;s finals in sixth.<\/p>\n<p>Hungary&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Boglarka Kapas\u00a0<\/strong>swam a 4:04.11 to take seventh and Australia&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Tamsin Cook\u00a0<\/strong>secured the last spot with a 4:04.36.<\/p>\n<h3>Men&#8217;s 400 Freestyle Relay<\/h3>\n<p>The Russian team of\u00a0<strong>Andrey Grechin\u00a0<\/strong>(48.58),\u00a0<strong>Aleksandr Popkov\u00a0<\/strong>(48.18),\u00a0<strong>Danila Izotov\u00a0<\/strong>(47.65), and\u00a0<strong>Alexander Sukhorukov\u00a0<\/strong>(47.63) won the first heat of the men&#8217;s 400 freestyle relay in 3:12.04 to take the top spot at finals.<\/p>\n<p>Swimming in lane one, the United States&#8217;\u00a0<strong>Jimmy Feigen\u00a0<\/strong>(48.55),\u00a0<strong>Ryan Held\u00a0<\/strong>(47.79),\u00a0<strong>Blake Pieroni\u00a0<\/strong>(48.39), and\u00a0<strong>Anthony Ervin\u00a0<\/strong>(47.65) topped a competitive final heat to take the second seed into finals with a 3:12.38.<\/p>\n<p>The Australian squad of\u00a0<strong>James Magnussen\u00a0<\/strong>(48.85),\u00a0<strong>Kyle Chalmers\u00a0<\/strong>(47.04),\u00a0<strong>James Roberts\u00a0<\/strong>(48.33), and\u00a0<strong>Matthew Abood\u00a0<\/strong>(48.43) finished in 3:12.65, just behind the Americans.<\/p>\n<p>Those swims for the Americans and the Australians overcame some difficulty from last summer when neither team made the finals at World championships.<\/p>\n<p>The French finished fourth with a 3:13.27. Canada finished with a 3:14.06.
