{"id":216402,"date":"2016-08-07T06:08:56","date_gmt":"2016-08-07T13:08:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=216402"},"modified":"2016-08-07T06:08:56","modified_gmt":"2016-08-07T13:08:56","slug":"photo-gallery-relive-night-1-of-2016-rio-olympic-swimming","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/photo-gallery-relive-night-1-of-2016-rio-olympic-swimming\/","title":{"rendered":"Photo Gallery: Relive Night 1 of 2016 Rio Olympic Swimming"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In the first night in the aquatic center in Rio, gold medals were awarded in four events.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Kosuke Hagino\u00a0<\/strong>ended the Americans&#8217; five Olympic winning streak in the 400 IM, and was joined on the podium by his Japanese teammate\u00a0<strong>Daiya Seto<\/strong>.\u00a0<strong>Michael Phelps<\/strong>&#8216; protege\u00a0<strong>Chase Kalisz\u00a0<\/strong>brought home silver in his Olympic debut.<\/p>\n<p>In a wide open men&#8217;s 400 freestyle field, defending gold medalist\u00a0<strong>Sun Yang\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0<strong>Mack Horton\u00a0<\/strong>powered away from the field in the final 50 meters and Horton got his hand to the wall first to take gold for Australia.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Katinka Hosszu\u00a0<\/strong>demolished the world record in the women&#8217;s 400 IM. The Australian quartet of\u00a0<strong>Bronte<\/strong> and\u00a0<strong>Cate Campbell<\/strong>, along with\u00a0<strong>Emma McKeon\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0<b>Brittany Elmslie\u00a0<\/b>clocked a new world mark of their own in the women&#8217;s 400 freestyle relay.<\/p>\n<p>While\u00a0<strong>Adam Peaty\u00a0<\/strong>did not challenge the world record he set in prelims of the 100 breaststroke, the swimmer for Great Britain still swam well ahead of the field in the semifinals.<\/p>\n<p><em>USA Today\u00a0<\/em>was on deck to capture all of the action.
