BELGRADE, Serbia, July 9. THE men's water polo action at the World University Games continued with quarterfinal and classification matches.<\/p>\n
Four quarterfinal matches took place. Greece clipped Hungary, 8-7, in the first match. Georgios Katsoulakis notched three goals for Greece, which converted 8 of 27 shots. Erik Bundschuh led Hungary with two goals, as the team went 7-for-28.<\/p>\n
Australia doubled up the U.S., 8-4. Richard Campbell and Anthony Martin each connected for two goals for Australia, which went 8-for-29. Andrew Colin Mello paced the U.S. with two goals, as the Americans went 4-for-24.<\/p>\n
Croatia rolled over Russia, 16-8, in another quarterfinal matchup. Marin Ban and David Babic each collected a hat trick for Croatia. Croatia converted on 16 of 25 shots. Vitaly Yurchik hit the back of the net twice for Russia, which went 8-for-26.<\/p>\n
Serbia nipped Italy, 7-6, in the final match of the night. Milos Cuk led the host country with two goals, as the squad went 7-for-25. Paride Saccoia connected for two goals as well, as Italy converted on 6 of 29 shots.<\/p>\n
In the 9-12 semifinal matches, Japan edged Montenegro, 14-13, while Spain downed France, 8-5. Masatoshi Someya notched four goals for Japan, which went 14-for-33, while Darko Brguljan and Filip Klikovac collected hat tricks for Montenegro, which scored on 13 of 28 shots. Adria Sanz Fernandez and Daniel Hernandez Murillo each tallied two goals for Spain, which converted on 8 of 30 shots. Five different players connected for France, which went 5-for-25 from the field.<\/p>\n
Canada doubled up Poland, 6-3, for 13th place with Poland dropping to 14th. John Kaukinen and Sasa Palamarevic each totaled two goals for Canada, which converted on 6 of 23 shots. Three separate players scored for Poland, which went 3-for-22.<\/p>\n
Mexico beat China, 21-10, for 15th place with China falling to 16th. Rainer Schmidt tallied a remarkable seven goals against China, while Mexico went 21-for-32 from the field.
