Hagino took over the lead on the backstroke leg. As the swimmers turned for breaststroke, the United State\u2019s <\/span><b>Chase Kalisz <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">began to move up in the breaststroke leg and was second heading into the final 100 meters.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The United States has five straight Olympic gold medals in this event and Kalisz put together a valiant effort, closing the gap to a half second with 50 meters remaining. Hagino claimed gold, the first for Japan in this event, in 4:06.05 while Kalisz secured his first Olympic medal with a 4:06.75 for silver. That time was a lifetime best by another second and a half.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Seto earned bronze in 4:09.71. Great Britain\u2019s <\/span><b>Max Litchford<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> finished fourth in 4:11.62.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">American <\/span><b>Jay Litherland <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">was fifth in 4:11.68, only .06 behind Litchford.Australian <\/span><b>Thomas Fraser-Holmes <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">was also on his heels in 4:11.90.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Travis Mahoney <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of Australia touched seventh in 4:15.48. Spain\u2019s<\/span><b> Joan Lluis Pons Ramon <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">finished eighth in 4:16.58.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Women\u2019s 100 Butterfly Semifinal<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">World record holder <\/span><b>Sarah Sjostrom <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of Sweden touched in Olympic record time of 55.84 and will be first tomorrow night. Australia\u2019s <\/span><b>Emma McKeon <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">had a powerful swim from an outside lane and will return to finals in second with a 56.81. Japan\u2019s <\/span><b>Rikako Ikee <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">took the first semifinal in 57.05 and will return to tomorrow\u2019s final in third.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">American <\/span><b>Dana Vollmer <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">snagged second in the first semifinal and will be fourth seed tomorrow night with her 57.06. World Junior record holder <\/span><b>Penny Oleksiak <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of Canada stopped the clock in 57.10.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">China\u2019s <\/span><b>Ying Lu <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(57.15) and Denmark\u2019s <\/span><b>Jeanette Ottesen <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">followed in 57.15 and 57.47. <\/span><b>Xinyi Chen <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of China completes tomorrow\u2019s final after touching in 57.51.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The United States\u2019 <\/span><b>Kelsi Worrell <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">was long into the finish and was fourth in the first semifinal. She finished ninth in 57.54 and will not advance to finals. Korea\u2019s <\/span><b>Sehyeon An <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">touched tenth in 57.95. Japan\u2019s <\/span><b>Natsumi Hoshi <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(58.03),<\/span><b> Farida Osman <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of Egypt (58.26), Hungary\u2019s <\/span><b>Lilian Szilagyi <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(58.31), Brazil\u2019s <\/span><b>Daiene Marcal <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(58.52), Belarus\u2019 <\/span><b>Kimberly Buys <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(58.63) and <\/span><b>Daynara De Paula <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of Brazil (58.65) also swam in tonight\u2019s semifinals.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Men\u2019s 400 Freestyle Final<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><b>James Guy <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of Great Britain led at the 100 meter mark and held on through the halfway mark. The field creeped up at the 300 mark and swam nearly four across with 50 meters to go.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Australia\u2019s <\/span><b>Mack Horton <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and China\u2019s <\/span><b>Sun Yang <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">charged ahead in the final 50 meters. Horton got to the wall first, upsetting Yang\u2019s bid for back to back gold. Horton touched in 3:41.55 to Yang\u2019s 3:41.68.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Italy\u2019s <\/span><b>Gabriele Detti <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">claimed silver in 3:43.89.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">American <\/span><b>Conor Dwyer <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">finished just outside of a medal with a fourth place 3:44.01 while his teammate <\/span><b>Connor Jaeger<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was fifth in 3:44.16. Guy faded to a 3:44.68. Australia&#8217;s <\/span><b>David McKeon <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">was seventh in 3:45.28 and France\u2019s <\/span><b>Jordan Pothain <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">touched eighth in 3:49.07.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Women&#8217;s 400 IM Final<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><b>Katinka Hosszu <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">flirted with the world record this morning in the 400 IM. She was well ahead of it again tonight and held on through the freestyle. Hosszu touched in a final time of 4:26.36, destroying the world record. The old mark was a 4:28.43 swum in 2012.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">American <\/span><b>Maya DiRado <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">also turned ahead of world record pace at the 300 meter mark and finished second in 4:31.15.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That time was\u00a0just three one-hundredths off\u00a0<strong>Katie Hoff&#8217;s<\/strong> American record of 4:31.12.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Spain\u2019s<\/span><b> Mireia Belmonte Garcia <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">held off Great Britain\u2019s <\/span><b>Hannah Miley <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">for the bronze. Belomnte Garcia touched in 4:32.39 to Miley&#8217;s 4:32.54.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Emily Overholt<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of Canada finished fifth with a 4:34.70.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2012 silver medalist <\/span><b>Elizabeth Beisel <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of the United States wound up sixth in 4:34.98. <\/span><b>Aimee Willmott<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of Great Britain snagged seventh in 4:35.04.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Japan\u2019s <\/span><b>Sakiko Shimizu <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">was eighth with a 4:38.06.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Men\u2019s 100 Breaststroke Semifinals<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This morning <\/span><b>Adam Peaty <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">lowered his own world record with a 57.55. Tonight, he became the owner of the six fastest times in history with a 57.62.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">American <\/span><b>Cody Miller <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">recorded a best time of 59.05. South Africa\u2019s <\/span><b>Cameron Van Der Burgh <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">touched in 59.21 for the third seed tomorrow.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Japan\u2019s <\/span><b>Yasuhiro Koseki <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">won a tight opening semifinal in 59.23 and will be the fourth seed. American record holder <\/span><b>Kevin Cordes <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">was right behind him with a 59.33 to grab fifth. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The home crowd\u2019s <\/span><b>Felipe France <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><b>Jao Gomes <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">will return to finals in sixth and seventh with a 59.35 and 59.40. <\/span><b>Dmitriy Balandin <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">also snuck into the final in 59.45.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Australia\u2019s <\/span><b>Jake Packard <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(59.48) and Lithuania\u2019s <\/span><b>Giedrius Titenis <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(59.80) were also under a minute but will not advance to finals.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Great Britain\u2019s <\/span><b>Ross Murdoch <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(1:00.05), Germany\u2019s <\/span><b>Christian Vom Lehn <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(1:00.23), <\/span><b>Li Xiang <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of China (1:00.25), Russia\u2019s <\/span><b>Vxevolod Zanko <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(1:00.39), New Zealand\u2019s <\/span><b>Glenn Snyders <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(1:00.50) and Colombia\u2019s <\/span><b>Jorge Mario Murillo Valdes <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(1:00.81) also swam in tonight\u2019s semifinals.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Women\u2019s 400 Freestyle Relay Final<\/b><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>Simone Manuel <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(53.36) got the Americans to the wall just before the Australia\u2019s <\/span><b>Emma McKeon<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (53.41) at the 100 meter mark. <\/span><b>Abbey Weitzeil <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">put together a 52.56 to pull a little bit further ahead of the field and Australia\u2019s <\/span><b>Brittany Elmslie <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(53.12).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Bronte Campbell <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(52.15) dove into the third leg six tenths behind and finished her leg with a four tenth lead over the Americans who had <\/span><b>Dana Vollmer <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(53.18) in the water. <\/span><b>Cate Campbell <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(51.97) dove in under world record pace and pulled further ahead. The Australians snuck under the world record with their final time of 3:30.65, better than the old 3:30.98.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Katie Ledecky <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(52.79)<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">held off a charging Canadian team to earn silver for the Americans. The American squad set a new American Record of 3:31.89. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Canada touched in 3:32.89 for the bronze medal with the team of <\/span><b>Sandrine Mainville <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(53.86), <\/span><b>Chantal Van Landeghem <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(53.13), <\/span><b>Taylor Ruck <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(53.19), and <\/span><b>Penny Oleksiak <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(52.72).<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The Netherlands finished fourth in 3:33.81.
