BELGRADE, Australia, July 4. AUSTRALIAN University Sport and Swimming Australia Limited have announced that Australian swimmer Matthew Jaukovic has withdrawn from competition at the 25th Universiade (World University Games) Belgrade 2009 due to viral bronchial pneumonia and confirmed positive to the H1N1 virus.<\/p>\n
Matthew is recovering and is being cared for through the Military Hospital Belgrade, Serbia in consultation with Australian University Sport team doctors.<\/p>\n
Matthew was expected to race in both the men's 50m and 100m Butterfly at the Tasmajdan swimming complex in Belgrade next week.<\/p>\n
Martin Roberts, Chef de Mission of the 184 strong Australian Team for the Universiade in Belgrade said that "The whole team share Matt's disappointment at having to miss the games but his health and recovery from pneumonia is the number one priority at this time. I have been in touch with Matt by phone every day and our team physicians report that he is recovering very well."<\/p>\n
Head Coach of the Australian Swimming Team for the Universiade, Leigh Nugent added that Matt was an important part of our squad and his presence will be missed by the 12 strong swimming team that includes Olympic Gold medallist, Alice Mills.<\/p>\n
The Universiade Belgrade 2009 swimming competition starts at the Tasmajdan pool on Sunday 5th July.<\/p>\n
