A DIII Swimmer&#8217;s Olympic Musings"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By Julia Cunningham, Swimming World College Intern<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The first thing many people ask me once they learn I am a swimmer, if they are unfamiliar with the sport, is if I am going to Olympics. My answer is always a scoff and a resounding \u201cno.\u201d My highest achievement in the sport has been becoming an All-American at DIII Nationals, with a time that wouldn&#8217;t even be close to qualifying for the DI equivalent. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the same time, however, while I am nowhere near the qualifying times, I have certainly put in the working time to feel as though I shouldn\u2019t have to dismiss the Olympics question quite so easily. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I have been swimming for just as many years as <\/span><b>Missy Franklin<\/b>, but that&#8217;s about all we have in common<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> I didn\u2019t go on to make it to Junior Nationals or Nationals. I certainly didn\u2019t qualify for Trials, let alone set a world record before I entered college.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In\u00a0fact, before entering college, it didn\u2019t take me long to decide I didn&#8217;t want to attend a DI school. My times going into college wouldn\u2019t have been the slowest at select<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> schools, but I didn\u2019t want the large student body, the sprawling campus, or the demands of the sport at that level. \u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And, looking back, I haven\u2019t had any regrets about choosing a DIII program.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Swimming in college at any level is a treat unto itself. It provides a network that you can rely on through college and beyond. Being on a team teaches you countless life lessons, and gains you some of the best friends you\u2019ve ever known. What if I had been faster in high school? What if I had had a chance to train under different coaches? What could have been? <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These are the \u201cwhat ifs\u201d that have prompted brief conversations with some of my friends. And the reason why they\u2019re brief is because ultimately, the \u201cwhat ifs\u201d are irrelevant. And we always come to the same conclusion: we\u00a0couldn&#8217;t be happier with where we ended up. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At NCAAs in Shenandoah, Texas in 2015, I watched <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/%EF%BF%BCachieving-the-possible-emorys-andrew-wilson\/\" target=\"_blank\"><b>Andrew Wilson <\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">destroy the DIII NCAA records in the 100 and 200 breaststrokes as well as the 200 IM, in the process posting what would have been the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncaa.com\/news\/swimming-men\/article\/2015-03-20\/kenyon-swimmers-looking-wrap-34th-title-past-36-seasons\" target=\"_blank\">third fastest time<\/a> at DI NCAAs in the 100 breaststroke.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A year and a half later, I watched him on national television finish fifth in the 100 breast (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.usaswimming.org\/DesktopDefault.aspx?TabId=2124&amp;Alias=Rainbow&amp;Lang=en\" target=\"_blank\">59.97<\/a>) at Trials, just .79 seconds behind the winner, <\/span><b>Kevin Cordes<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a dominant DI swimmer. A few days later, Wilson swam to a fourth place finish in the 200 (2:09.35), 2.18 seconds behind winner <\/span><b>Josh Prenot<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When they announced Wilson\u2019s name behind the blocks, they mentioned that it was unusual that a DIII swimmer would be standing there among the DI Champions and American record holders. When I heard that, I laughed aloud. It seemed the understatement of the century.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Andrew Wilson was living every young swimmer\u2019s dream that, for many, will die before they enter college, especially if they go DIII. Wilson, and the many collegiate athletes who made the Olympic team this year, were changing the game. They were bringing recognition to the fact that you don&#8217;t have to be a pro athlete to make the Olympics. Trials also provided (additional) answers to my \u201cWhat ifs?\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Almost every rookie Olympian, after making the team, was asked: \u201cHow do you feel right now?\u201d And many of the responses began with \u201cI\u2019m just glad all the hard work paid off.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That was when I texted my friend: \u201cYeah, but what about our hard work? Haven\u2019t we put in almost as many hours and almost definitely as many tears?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The response: \u201cSometimes I\u2019ll go back and forth about whether or not I\u2019ve put in enough work, but in the end it\u2019s always a \u2018yes.\u2019\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because we\u2019re not <\/span><b>Katie Ledeky<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">s and <\/span><b>Dana Vollmer<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">s. We just can\u2019t all be <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">that good<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. My friend and I both have seen our own hard work play out into many successes, even if they weren&#8217;t broadcast to the world. We&#8217;ve had our moments, and there&#8217;s no reason to regret not accomplishing unfeasible feats.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> What we can be is appreciative. Wilson may have not created a stir because he didn\u2019t finish in the top two, but he did draw attention to the fact that a DIII swimmer <em>could<\/em> final at Trials. Plenty of other DIII swimmers as well as teenagers not yet in high school swam in Omaha, but weren\u2019t seen on national television because they didn\u2019t final. That doesn&#8217;t take anything away from the fact that they competed among the greats.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The lack of recognition doesn&#8217;t define a career. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So, for the people who don\u2019t know the sport of swimming, it is important that they recognize the careers of the greats as a testament to the hard work we&#8217;re <em>all <\/em>putting in.
